If you stayed up last night watching the live 2015 Logie Awards, you probably cried like a big baby when Carrie Bickmore delivered her acceptance speech for the gold Logie. Using the opportunity to raise awareness of something very close to her heart, The Project star slapped on a beanie to pay tribute to her late husband, Greg Lange, who passed away from brain cancer in 2010.
“Over 10 years I watched him suffer multiple seizures a day, lose feeling down one side of his body,” Carrie said in her speech. “He had his little 3-year-old push him around in a wheelchair because he couldn’t walk anymore. He was an incredibly brave man. He was a great dad, he was a great husband, he was a great brother and he was a great friend, but he shouldn’t have had to go through that, no one should have to go through that.”
She continued, “And that’s why I want to raise awareness about it tonight. Throughout his cancer journey he used to wear a lot of hats and a lot of beanies and that’s because he felt embarrassed about his scars and his head, and I used to say to him, ‘don’t be embarrassed, scars are cool, and beanies are cool!’”
Carrie then urged Australia to wear a beanie today to bring attention to the issue. “I want to ask anyone that’s on TV in Australia tomorrow to whack on a beanie. I want to get the nation talking about brain cancer.” The reaction to her speech has been heartwarming. Over 4,000 posts under the #beaniesforbraincancer hashtag have been posted to Instagram alone, and big-names across Australian television and radio have also shown their support.
Check out all the celebs who are backing Carrie and bringing awareness to a disease which affects so many.
