We Dare You: 10 Ways to Challenge Your Beauty Look this Winter

Imaxtree

Imaxtree

We love winter for all sorts of reasons—it's both a great time to recharge and to figure out which brand makes your favorite hot chocolate. That said, dressing for winter, after a while, can be a bit stunting. Covering everything up with an overcoat/scarf/hat combo can get old. To combat these feelings, we're taking a pledge to get down and dirty (and also have some fun) experimenting with something that could always use some freshening up: our beauty routines. Whether experimenting for you means working to find your new signature scent or trying out some nutty runway-ready colors for lips and eyes, there's something out there for you to fiddle with, beautifully. Click through for the 10 things we're itching to try.

Still Loving: Fashion Sweatshirts at Every Price

The reign of the fashion sweatshirt is far-reaching—from high-street shops to the runways—and even if this kind of high-low trend annoys you, you can't help but give it up for the lowly sweatshirt. There's basically no reason to hate: it's warm, it's insanely comfortable, it's easy, and now that it's uber-trendy, there is no end to the market options or ways to wear it. We'd never say no to a super-luxe version (secretly saving our pennies for a piece from Givenchy) but we also love all the other stuff, including both high-end Kenzo and Band of Outsiders and affordable choices from stalwarts Topshop and ASOS. Click through for 10 can't-go-wrong sweatshirts.

Candela’s Gabi Perezutti on Effortless Bridal Style

Gabi_Headshot-c

I’ve never been one of those girls to plot her dream wedding since the age of 5. At this point, I’m not even sure I want to get married, let alone how I feel about flower arrangements or the heated band vs. DJ debate.

In the past few years, I’ve been to friends’ weddings around the world and never cease to be amazed by the level of detail considered for months and oft years prior to the main event. It’s enough to make any sane, single woman want to stay that way for as long as possible. And while I don’t know when, where and to whom I may marry in the future, what I do know is that my dress will be an effortless, elegant and potentially backless affair a la this Celine Dress from Candela.

Effortless and elegant: Two adjectives not unfamiliar to Candela designer Gabriela “Gabi” Perezutti. Her line has been described as “ripe with gaucho sway and signs of modern urban life,” the nexus at which both extremes meet through a unique point of view. At least, that’s what Gabi told me when I caught up with her in NYC last week. The native Uruguayan and now West Villager loves the juxtaposition of the rustic with the urban, a blend that has inspired her designs since Candela was born in 2004.

“It’s been a long road and lot of hard work,” Gabi tells me when I ask how she feels about Candela’s current spot as industry fashion darling. “Any attention is very welcome.” The attention continues to grow, especially with the Fall 2013 and most recent Resort 2014 collections. Favorites of Gabi’s include the Sansa ballerina (“in every color!”) and the Oles booties featuring cross embroidery from her father’s poncho.

Where else does she find inspiration? “Living in the city and traveling are always the best triggers,” she says. “It can also be music, art and movies…anything that moves me.” Besides her own, favorite collections include Valentino, Dior by Raf Simons, Celine by Phoebe Philo and Sacai by Chitose Abe.

The emphasis seems to be on the natural, when it comes to both style and beauty: “My mother gave me the best advice,” she muses. “If you’re going to wear makeup (which I rarely do), it should look like you don't have any on. I am a big believer in natural inspiration.”

And for me? Natural evolution. And who says you can’t rock a backless cream gown without a ring on your finger anyway?

Less is More Than Enough for These Minimal Bags

Fashion trends wax and wane, and along with it, embellishment levels. Indeed, sometimes everything's adorned with studs and other weird details, and immediately after, there's a complete wash of it, paring down pieces to their core. Today we're highlighting those minimal bags, which feel like such a breath of fresh air when considering luxury handbag logo overload. Enough with the "LV" and metal garb—time to pick something classic that will last for seasons to come (it's harder to tack on an expiration date to the most simple of silhouettes). Click through for 10 great picks, in every price range.

There are a few perfect standby textiles each season—summer gets seersucker and linen, fall is all about plaid and (faux) fur. For your consideration. however, is one of our personal favorite cold-weather fabrics, one that is appropriate for both high-end holiday parties and your regular ol' Wednesday night: velvet. In basic black it's both luxe and slightly retro (if this forthcoming list doesn't do it for you, the babydoll dress section of your local thrift store should do the trick). Used to make anything from zippered jeans to shoes to hair accessories, count on velvet to up the sartorial ante on every occasion. Ahead: 10 top picks.

10 Seriously Cute Novelty Sweaters to Shop Now

There are a few trademarks of a great novelty sweater: vaguely holiday-themed, littered with trendy animals and all sorts of random accoutrements. We think that instead of thumbing our noses at these works of post-modern sartorial art, we should definitely embrace them—and wear them on both lazy Sundays and to the next holiday party. They have great versatility, too: don't only wear 'em with jeans! Try pairing them with skirts long and short, solid and patterned. Shop Beyonce’s Buzzy Australian Designer Picks

Not one to limit herself to anything ever, let alone skydiving and draping herself over Brunswick porches, Beyoncé has also beystowed her beylessing on a lucky quartet of antipodean designers. Apparently she was hitting up a few local boutiques too, and has now immortalized four buzzy local labels via the carefully curated ‘Hotlinks’ hall of fame on her Beyhive blog: Sydney’s Dion Lee and Emma Mulholland, and New Zealand’s NOM*d and Karen Walker. Mazel tov, guys.

Since it’s the goal of a large percent of the first world’s population to become as close to Beyoncé as is humanly possible, we’re guessing the websites of Lee, Mulholland, Walker and Nom*d have had a significant increase in traffic over the last few days. But miraculously, not all of Beyoncé’s hot picks are currently being peddled via eBay at a 1000% markup. See beylow for four ways to have your outfit given the inadvertent Beyoncé stamp of approval.

10 Fall Clutches to Carry Anytime, Anywhere

clutches-c

Who would have thought the diminutive clutch would replace the oversized tote in our "favorite everyday bags" rotation. Maybe it's the freedom that comes with having to pare down our essentials. A phone, keys, lipstick and cash is far more liberating than carrying the full contents of our top desk drawer. And there's the distinct allure of a bag that you can carry to a business meeting or a black tie bash. Besides, who doesn't love an accessory that begs you with eponymous charm to clutch it close. Maybe the effect of all our high-low dressing, the cultivation of daytime glamour and the focus on statement pieces have all combined to make the clutch the bag of the season. Take a look at exhibit a, b, c…

6 Monochromatic Hits from the Melbourne Cup’s Derby Day

The race that stops a nation kicked off this last weekend with Derby Day. To fete the launch, our finest B and Z list celebrities mingled with some bigger names (hey, Naomi Campbell) in the event’s traditional monochromatic colors. Contrary to popular belief, black and white aren’t always simple colors to pull off – particularly when you combine them with bondage leather and a flattened hedgehog for a hat. But while we’re not quite sure what Jennifer Hawkins was thinking, some ladies pulled it off with aplomb. See below for our top six monochromatic looks.
