Coco Rocha Helps Celebrate Canada’s Biggest Sephora Store

It was a high-wattage scene on Vancouver’s Robson Street last night as the city’s glitterati primped and primed for the opening of the new Sephora store, the biggest in Canada. Canadian supermodel and national treasure Coco Rocha was on hand to greet revelers, bask in the immense beauty of the store, and just generally look flawless and envy-inducing. The mom-to-be, who announced her pregnancy via YouTube earlier this month, is also promoting her book Study of Pose, a photographic tome created with renowned photographer Steven Sebring.

The masses packed into the new Sephora store, which covers 8,600 square feet of precious Robson Street real estate, to nibble on sweet treats and raise a glass of champagne in celebration. Bopping to the beats of famous DJ Alexandra Richards, Vancouver’s Pretty Young Things swiped mascara, spritzed perfume and dabbed lip gloss into the night. The Twittersphere was understandably abuzz with praise for Richards’ DJing prowess — not surprising for the daughter of a Rolling Stone!

Sephora Robson joins a growing list of American chains to open up on the street in recent years, including Victoria’s Secret and J.Crew. The store carries more than 200 colour, skincare, fragrance and haircare brands. Some of the services that are exclusive to this location include a Bumble & bumble hair studio where experts will show customers how to achieve the hottest styles, and a Skincare Studio where Sephora experts will share the latest trends in skincare while giving customers a facial service. Sephora Robson officially opens its doors today.

Steven Meisel Brings the Holiday Spirit Earlier than Expected to Vogue Italia’s November Cover (Forum Buzz)

Eek! In the Cover Rumor Thread we had our hearts set on Gemma Ward fronting the next issue of Vogue Italia. Oh well, I guess we can’t complain about another appearance from Carolyn Murphy, who always delivers the goods. Vogue Italia‘s November cover surfaced earlier today and it stars the American model photographed by Steven Meisel. Murphy poses wearing Miu Miu with her hand on her head, suggesting she’s had enough of the holiday spirit — already!

Wolkfolk kicked off the discussion to a good start and wrote, “Completely unexpected to see Carolyn but what a wonderful surprise!! The cover is freaking amazing.”

“It’s a good cover! I love the star sequins that are scattered and placed on her arm, and the lighting is beautiful too,” agreed IsabelMarantBoy.

Also to admire Carolyn’s latest work is Ortemis who simply wrote the word “captivating” inside the thread.

Srdjan seems impressed too and posts, “I never buy Italian Vogue, but I might get it this time! I love Carolyn and this is definitely alluring! It has Vogue Italia edginess but not too much, just the way I like it.”

Yet not everyone’s on board. “Holiday Allure? What exactly displays this feeling here? she looks dead!!! One of these dead by strangulation cases… eyes open… mouth slightly open… seriously! I like Carolyn’s work in general but not this… in essence, I don’t dislike the image but it simply doesn’t work in conjunction with ‘Holiday Allure’? VI is the most pretentious magazine at the moment! Their concepts almost never translate into their imagery…” comments a very disappointed KissMiss.

Oxymore shares the same sentiments: “Nice cover but, ‘Holiday Allure’ in November?”

A different cover line and would we have loved this? Await the cover story and share your own opinion inside the thread here.

Miranda Kerr Might Like You Better if You Rock a Moustache this Movember

If you love rocking a hairy upper lip, then you might be in luck. Miranda Kerr has somewhat encouraged the bristly fellas via Instagram by donning a pair of 7 For All Mankind jeans, which are adorned with a cute ‘stache logo on the pocket to help raise money for the Movember Foundation.

Whether or not she actually prefers moustaches on her jeans or her men remains a mystery, especially when ex-hubby Orlando Bloom traded from stubbly to clean face so often.

Over here at theFashionSpot, we’re all about facial hair on a man. 7 For All Mankind is too, understanding that the visual feast which is Movember might be more than your body can handle. It’s teamed up with the Movember Foundation to introduce two limited-edition jeans for 2014, so that we can all keep it in our pants this mo-friendly season.

7 For All Mankind

For each pair sold, $20 will be donated to the Movember Foundation to support men’s health. We’re still not entirely sure if Miranda’s pro-mo all year round, or just for the month of November, or even at all, so keep that in mind before you grow the mo beyond Movember, gentlemen.

BRW 2014 Young Rich List Crowns Erica Baxter as Three Times Richer than Miranda Kerr

Miranda Kerr Erica Baxter

Photo: Valerie Macon/Stefanie Keenan/Getty

Erica Baxter and Miranda Kerr, who are rumoured to be part of this year’s hottest love hexagon, have made the BRW 2014 Young Rich List of disgustingly wealthy Australians under 40.

The girls, who both happen to be from Gunnedah and linked to each other’s ex husbands, are absolutely swimming in it. But Erica’s bank account stands at an impressive $73 million and is more than triple the amount of Miranda’s $24 million. Then again, Miranda wasn’t the one who put a ring on it, then off it, with two-time-divorcee and billionaire businessman James Packer.

Erica made her unconventional debut on BRW‘s Young Rich List last year at $40 million, shortly following one of the most bittersweet divorce settlements ever. Erica managed to take out Miranda last year, too, who sat on $18 million.

Both girls have managed to rake in millions over the past year, so good on them. They were two of only five females who made this year’s top 100. They weren’t trumped by ex-husband or apparent lover-boy James, who is too old to make the Young Rich List cut at 47 years of age

Carolyn Croswell, of Carman’s Fine Foods, upstaged both Erica and Miranda as the richest female on the list with $83 million. Carolyn is not from Gunnedah and has no detectable link to any of the Packers.

ELLE magazine Gets Charitable for the Cotton On Foundation

ELLE Australia magazine has joined forces with Cotton On, creating a limited-edition necklace and bracelet with proceeds helping the Cotton On Foundation fund its projects in Southern Uganda.

The charitable collaboration came about when members from the ELLE team, including editor Justin Cullen, feature’s editor Vanessa Lawrence and lifestyle director Jana Johnson-O’Toole, joined the Cotton On Foundation on a trip to Mannya Villahe in Southern Uganda. The girls witnessed the work which has been done for the community, and learned about their plans for the future, and were so inspired that they created accessories to help fund its projects.

“We feel so lucky to have visited some of the areas where the Cotton On Foundation is making such a difference, and we couldn’t wait to come home, tell the stories of the people we met and the things we saw, and enlist our readers to help the cause,” Justine told the Cotton On Foundation.

The glossy’s entire team was behind the design process of the two exclusive pieces, with a result sure to please fashion lovers (models Phoebe Tonkin, Lara Bingle and Cheyenne Tozzi are already repping the pieces) and benefit Southern Ugandans in the process.

The ELLE x Cotton On Foundation jewellery will be sold in selected Australian Cotton On stores and online.

Stylish Ladies Impressed the Eligible Men at the CLEO Bachelor of the Year 2014 Announcement Party

There’s no better event than the CLEO Bachelor of the Year 2014 announcement party for the ladies to pull out their sexiest threads. And they did just that, with reality TV personalities, actresses and media identities stepping out in figure-hugging, skin-baring, cleavage-showing dresses and ensembles to impress the country’s most eligible and single men. Scroll through below to see the hottest looks from the night.

CLEO

Photo: Graham Denholm/Getty

This is a hard one to try and get your head around, but The Bachelor‘s bachelorettes stepped out for CLEO‘s bachelors. Contestant Chantal Hryniewski went all-out sexy, donning a black long-sleeve T-shirt tucked into a leather skirt, plus T-bar heels and a chained choker. She looked a little red-eyed behind that chunky fringe — we hope no more bachies have been breaking her heart.

Zoe O’Brien was also looking fine alongside Chantal in a tight white midi dress from Tiger Mist, which showed off her ample cleavage and surprises of skin through crochet panels.

We’re not sure if Tully Smyth was looking to impress the bachelors or not, due to her undetermined sexual orientation, but she certainly amazed in this Lottie Hall apron-style mini.

Host for the night Carissa Walford wowed in a risqué yellow dress with sheer panels by Shona Joy. The show-stopping piece was toned down with simple tan pumps, bronzed makeup and easy hair. Model Zoe Cross posed with Carissa, wearing a high-neck navy dress by Shakuhachi, teamed with classy two-strap black heels and a statement red lip.

High-Neck Bikini Tops: The Love List

We’ve said it before — the higher the neckline, the better. That goes for swimwear too, because the high-neck detail looks extra sports-luxe, and therefore extra amazing, when used on spandex and lycras.

Whether it’s a vintage-esque halter tie-up style, or an athletic racerback cut, with retro prints, or flirty frills, there’s plenty of ways to jump on this trend. Besides, we heard a rumour you were growing tired of the ol’ triangle bikini. You are, aren’t you?

This summer is the perfect time to get playful with your swimwear. Check out our favourite high-neck bikini options from the web below.

Aussie Beauties Step Out for Sunglass Hut’s 94 Shades of Summer Launch Party

Sunglass Hut held its 94 Shades of Summer launch party at Sydney’s Bennelong Point last night, unveiling Natasha Oakley’s new season campaign, video and personally curated collection for the eyewear brand. Australian beauties Tahnee Atkinson and Renae Ayris, along with Natasha, stepped out in feminine-meets-sexy threads to celebrate, and you can check out their looks below.

Tahnee Atkinson

Photo: Zak Kaczmarek/WireImage

Model Tahnee looked extra sweet in a white halter dress with blue floral-applique detail. We would have loved to see her trade her black-mesh booties for something which suited the flirty frock better, like simple two-strap pumps or tough leather ankle boots.

Natasha Oakley

Photo: Zak Kaczmarek/WireImage

A Bikini A Day’s Natasha stepped into the limelight in a white high-neck lace midi dress by Lover, teamed with classic black heels. The main attraction’s bronzed makeup and side-swept blonde waves made this look especially dreamlike, but that sunset backdrop helped too.

Sunglass Hut

Photo: Zak Kaczmarek/WireImage

A nude-on-nude getup is no easy feat, so we’re willing to applaud Renae even if we’re not 100 per cent sold on her outfit. The pageant model opted for a skirt-and-crop set by Denisse M Vera, but we think the look could’ve lost the macramé accessory and party shoes.

Circus-Inspired Getups and Flirty Frocks for the Cirque du Soleil Totem Sydney Premiere

Cirque du Soleil Totem premiered at Sydney’s Moore Park last night, with a star-studded audience flocking into a blue-and-yellow striped big top to watch the magic happen. Some outfits were circus-appropriate and a bit casual and quirky, while others stepped it up in classy frocks. Scroll through below to see our favourite looks from the night.

Margaret Zhang

Fashion blogger (and Fashion Blogger ) Margaret Zhang layered up in a shiny emerald-green midi dress, with a white collar and grid-check trousers peeping out from underneath. She matched her green-satin platform shoes to the frock, and added a burgundy lip to stay in line with the luxe and dark tones.

Model Kate Peck was looking fit for the circus in bold stripey pants by Death Suite, pared back with a tucked-in white tank, plus pointed-toe Tony Bianco pumps and Thomas Sabo jewels.

Erika Heynatz

While everyone else was off being eccentric and kind of weird when it came to the wardrobe department, Erika Heynatz was busy nailing her getup. The model and TV personality rocked a textured metallic peplum mini, with a flattering boat neck and batwing sleeves. The 38-year-old belted the piece in to further show off her amazing bod, and added edge with strappy pumps.

7 Things to Know Before Buying a Wedding Dress Online

Oscar de la Renta Bridal Spring 2015

Image: Imaxtree

Congratulations, you’re getting married! And as much as you’d love to fly to New York or Los Angeles to try on the wedding dress of your dreams, you don’t really have the time or money to make it happen, so you think, why not hit the web in search of the one? If you can find a husband online, surely you can find a dress, right? To help you meet your perfect match, we asked a few experts to reveal their insider secrets for shopping for a wedding gown online.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

When purchasing something as important (and pricey!) as a wedding dress off the Internet, you really want to make sure you do your due diligence. Florida-based wedding planner Aviva Samuels of Kiss the Planner strongly suggests that brides find out what the return policy is first and whether they’ll get a full refund or store credit only if the dress isn’t quite up to par in person. “You should also ask if the sizes are true to fit or if their gowns run big or small,” she says. “Inquire about shipping, too, when the dress will arrive and if that gives you enough time for alterations.”

Do Know What Looks Good on You

To avoid the disappointment and hassle of returns, Ilana Stern, CEO of Weddington Way, recommends getting a sense of what dress styles and necklines you look and feel amazing in prior to purchasing. “Think about your favorite dresses in your closet and determine what it is that you love about them (e.g., are they strapless, fitted, cap-sleeved, etc.).” Then take that knowledge to the web, so you can focus your search on a style that will truly flatter your figure.

Don’t Buy from an Unauthorized Retailer

There are a ton of sketchy websites out there that claim to carry dresses from your favorite designers at prices that simply sound too good to be true because, well, they are! Only look on websites that are authorized retailers of the designer brands in which you are interested, advises Stern. “This information can often be found in the ‘about us’ section or the ‘frequently asked questions’ section. You can also check out the designer’s website for a list of authorized retailers.”

Do Order Fabric Swatches

“Many online dress retailers offer you the chance to order swatches of fabric for the dress that you are interested in, which will give you a better sense of color, texture and feel,” points out Stern. “Once you’ve made your decision, these are also great to keep around to search for accessories.”

Don’t Pay with Cash or Money Order

Always use your credit card, urges bridal expert and Editorial Director of You & Me TV Anne Chertoff. This way, in case you get burned, you won’t be out a few hundred, or worse, a few thousand, bucks. “Find out from your credit card company what their policy is in the event you’re sent a dress that’s different from what you ordered,” she says. “Some cards will get you your money back.”

Do Read Site Reviews

Buying from a website that is brand new to you? Then you’ll definitely want to do your homework first. “Ask around for references, either from friends or via bridal chat rooms/forums, to learn what other people are saying about a particular website before clicking the buy button,” warns Chertoff.

Don’t Forget to Take Your Measurements

To ensure the absolute best fit possible, take your measurements and use the designer size charts to select the right size for you, suggests Stern. “Remember: It’s typically a lot easier to take a dress in than it is to let one out, so if you’re between two sizes, go with the larger one.”

Vogue Brazil Taps Amanda Wellsh and Aline Weber for Rio Themed Issue (Forum Buzz)

Vogue Brazil gives us two covers to choose from this month and tapped Amanda Wellsh and Aline Weber to front both. On the first cover for the Rio-themed issue, the Brazilian models look ready for a night on the town wearing stunning black evening dresses with slicked back hair. The second cover sees the duo more relaxed sitting on a sandy beach with sea-soaked tresses while gazing down the lens of Giampaolo Sgura.

Members of theFashionSpot forums continue to express their excitement for both covers. “I like both covers!! So chill, so relax[ed]. I’m not even a fan of either one of the models!” comments alonsoJonathan, setting a positive attitude for the thread.

“Both covers are really good and always happy to see Aline!” raves justaguy.

TheoG agrees and expresses his excitement for the covers: “Surprised Sgura shot this! Overall I love this, especially Aline.”

Also to share the same sentiments is MON who posts, “I love how in the first cover, they look so young and innocent, then the second cover is the exact opposite — mature women that are down to business! I love this!”

“I like the story of the two covers side by side, from the beach to a night club,” enthuses kokobombon.

Gazebo even goes as far as to the say, “Best Vogue cover in a few years. It’s both real and aspirational,” and goes on to write, “I love Amanda a lot, next month give her a solo cover please.”

“The second cover is so sleek and sophisticated. Not really what you’d expect from Vogue Brazil. It would have been beautiful on its own. I really hope the multiple covers trend does not continue into next year though…” notes orchidee.

Which cover will you be getting from your local newsstand? See inside the thread for both covers side by side and join the discussion here.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Vamps It Up for Vogue Mexico’s November Cover (Forum Buzz)

After a blockbuster set of covers for its anniversary issue, Vogue Mexico continues to bring its A-game by producing a fabulous cover with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, lensed by James Macari. The British babe’s hair was styled in soft Hollywood waves and she donned a show-stopping pantsuit from Versace’s Fall 2014 collection. As usual, the cover will also be used for the Latin American edition of Vogue.

Most members of our forums are in favor of the cover. GlamVal expressed his excitement by writing, “I love this cover, [it] is so perfect, the only thing that annoys me is the necklace, [it] is awful. I think this is the best cover of the year. So happy the cover is not saturated with text.”

“How gorgeous, if you’re going for vamp, this is how to do it! All covers look good,” raved Miss Dalloway, noting the fold-out cover shots are on par with the main cover image.

But our forum members soon started to notice the amount of post-production. “She looks gorgeous, overly Photoshopped but still gorgeous,” commented KateTheGreatest.

Also sharing the same sentiments was justaguy, who wrote, “Rosie always looks over Photoshopped, but these are really nice covers.”

“Meh, too much Photoshop on her beautiful face, I wish she looked a little fresher/softer than this,” agreed marsnoop2.

“Indeed!” replied fluxxx, who went on to post, “She looks like [she] had too much Botox on her face on the cover.”

Margot Robbie Steps Out of Hiding Wearing Marc Jacobs in New York

Margot Robbie has been steering clear of the red carpet as of late. But her return to the scene, for the 31st Annual FGI Night of Stars event at New York’s Cipriani Wall Street on Thursday, October 23, was well worth the wait.

Margot Robbie Marc Jacobs

Her wardrobe was playful-meets-sexy, in a shimmering-green leopard-print Marc Jacobs dress from the label’s Resort 2015 collection. She polished it all off with black strappy Aquazzura pumps and a middle-parted pony.

After a whirlwind of hair colours, including blonde, brunette and copper, Margot has gone back to her natural golden roots, bringing back the sex-appeal she nailed for The Wolf of Wall Street.

We’re so glad we were patient with Margot, because her return did not disappoint. We can’t wait to praise her all over again, so here’s hoping she keeps up the red carpet appearances.

Reebok Australia Owes You Money for Not Boosting Your Butt’s Muscle Tone

Miranda Kerr

Photo: Youtube

Sorry, everyone. Reebok lied to you. But it’s literally going to pay for its fabricating ways, and you could benefit. The sportswear brand has been fined a whopping $350,000 in Australia for making false claims and statements about its EasyTone shoe range, which it said would boost muscle tone of thighs, calves and your butt more than normal sneakers.

Even though EasyTone shoes have been available in Australia since December 2009, the Federal Court has just now ruled that the representations made on shoe boxes, swing tags, information cards and in-store promotional material were misleading, breached three sections of Australian Consumer Law, and that Reebok had no reasonable grounds to make such claims.

As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald , Reebok claimed “balance pods built-in under the heel” and “balance ball-inspired technology with moving air” in EasyTone shoes would increase “muscle activation” of the butt area by 28 per cent and of thighs and calves by 11 per cent, but did so without any scientific evidence to back this promise.

To make matters worse, Reebok Australia pretty much saw the whole thing coming. In September 2011 Reebok US paid $25 million after the Federal Trade Commission claimed the company was misleading customers about the better legs promise. Reebok Australia was fully aware of the US settlement, but still supplied 16,448 EasyTone shoes inside misrepresented boxes between September 2011 right through to May 2012.

Reebok will not go unpunished for suggesting you’ll be on your way to a better behind by purchasing its EasyTones. An agreement reached with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will see Reebok refund $35 to customers who bought a pair of EasyTone shoes from September 2011 to February 2013, set up a hotline, publish corrective notices, and start a compliance program.

Poor Miranda Kerr was also misled, and you can watch her promote the deceitful brand below:

Allure Russia Puts Too Much Makeup on Maryna Linchuk’s Flawless Face (Forum Buzz)

Beauty magazines are receiving a bashing this month with U.S. Allure doing a disservice to Kerry Washington on its November cover and now Allure Russia has done the same with Maryna Linchuk. Why? Magazines today have access to some of the best in the business and can select the most flawless models available. Maryna stars on Russian Allure‘s November cover, shot by Nicolas Moore, with hair tended to by Brian Buenaventura and makeup applied by Romy Soleimani.

The cover isn’t sitting well with a couple of our forum members. “*Sigh* Back to the bionic covers again. This would’ve been OK if Maryna closed her mouth. I find teeth on a cover so unattractive,” disapproved Benn98.

“It’s too crowded, there’s too much makeup and the hair doesn’t help unfortunately,” proclaimed an underwhelmed Valentine27.

Also noticing the amount of unnecessary makeup was kokobombon: “Hate the heavy makeup but at least [it] is not a super closeup…”

KateTheGreatest shared the same sentiment and posted, “Gorgeous. Just wish the makeup wasn’t so heavy.”

A few members of our forums are in favor of the cover image, though, with MON writing, “It’s actually one of the few covers I like from them. Finally it’s not too zoomed in.”

“Maryna looks SPECTACULAR!” raved Zorka, clearly a fan of Allure‘s latest installment.

GIVENCHYlover agreed by simply stating, “She’s gorgeous.”

Virgin Australia Has a Valet Service for Your Spring Racing Hats

Let us tell you about a little something called “hat valet”. Sounds a bit ridiculous, doesn’t it? But really, Virgin Australia is just answering our spring racing prayers in the form of premium fascinator handling.

The airline will have porters on standby for those travelling from Sydney to Melbourne for Derby Day and Melbourne Cup, offering eligible guests a personalised hat valet service which ensures safe handling of your fragile race headwear.

But that’s not all. Eligible guests will also be treated to a range of pre-flight pampering, like blow dries and hair styling, shoe-shining services, and ModelCo makeup kits, to make sure you arrive race-ready. You’ll have to be one of Virgin Australia’s Business Class guests, Velocity Platinum, Gold and Lounge members, though.

Dannii Minogue is a Virgin Australia Platinum Velocity Frequent Flyer, so naturally she supports this whole hat valet thing. She says in a news release, “Racing headwear is one of the most valuable pieces of any race day outfit, and the Hat Valet and unique styling services offered by Virgin Australia are a fantastic way to support fashion-savvy race goers as they make their way to Melbourne for the Spring Racing Carnival.”

All the hat valet, shoe-shining, hair-drying fun will be available at Virgin Australia’s flagship Sydney Lounge from October 31. If you’re keen on some pre-racing pampering, check out the available times below.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer AKA Sarah Michelle Gellar is in Town for Specsavers

The 90s kid inside us just screamed a little. Sarah Michelle Gellar, more fondly known as Buffy the Vampire Slayer or the evil, borderline-incestuous Kathryn in Cruel Intentions, is in Australia on official business for Specsavers.

She’s a judge and ambassador of the brand’s 2014 Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition, to help inspire confidence in those who wear glasses. She hit up the Specsavers fashion show at Sydney’s Pier One Hotel last night, alongside Pip Edwards and Alex Perry, and also encouraged Samantha Armytage to try a pair of specs on Sunrise this morning.

Specsavers

Photo: Sunrise

Samantha agreed to wear the glasses but initially thought she looked like a librarian, which didn’t help the whole inspiring-confidence-in-glasses-wearers thing that Sarah Michelle and Specsavers are going for. The Sunrise co-host redeemed herself, though, saying, “I feel very envious of people who wear glasses, because I think they look quite cool.”

We, for one, think glasses and very cool. If you do too, you should probably enter the Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition here, by sending in a photo of yourself wearing glasses. You’ll win a trip to Hollywood and a year’s supply of designer glasses courtesy of Specsavers. Good luck!

Beauty Trends from World MasterCard Fashion Week

Grace Lee

Toronto’s World MasterCard Fashion Week is well underway, and the designs that have graced the runway so far seem to take innovation to a new level. But what about beauty? We went behind-the-scenes to speak with Maybelline New York Canada’s lead makeup artist Grace Lee to get the scoop on the makeup trends to look out for next season and what no woman can live without come spring.

theFashionSpot: What beauty trends are surfacing for Spring 2015?

Grace Lee: We’re seeing a lot of strong brows. [Thanks Cara!] And skin is immaculate-looking without being too dewy; it’s definitely more matte, healthy, poreless and clean. We’re also seeing a lot of lashes, both top and bottom, in a spin on 60s and 70s looks. And white is also a big story — on nails, eyeliner and eyeshadow.

tFS: What is typically your favourite show to key?

GL: Oh, that’s like asking me who my favourite kid is! I’d have to say that one of my favourites every season is Pink Tartan. I love our initial meetings because they’re usually very organic; [designer Kimberley Newport-Mimran] is so organized with her inspiration for the show and she inspires me to do amazing makeup. She lets me do my own thing, which I think results in a really good collaboration.

tFS: How has World MasterCard Fashion Week evolved over the years?

GL: It is so much stronger now and impactful. We have developed such a strong Canadian voice and we have such amazing talent.

tFS: What does every woman have to have in her makeup bag next season?

GL: A good mascara will get you really far. Look for a mascara wand with a curved bristle brush, which will deliver with no clumping. And it will allow you to get all those fine little hairs in the inside corners of your eyes that you forget about. And definitely invest in a really good curler.

tFS: Do you have any top tips for applying fake lashes?

GL: Always make sure you wait a couple of seconds after you apply the glue to the lash strip because the glue needs air to get tacky. Also, apply mascara to your lashes first to act as a good base for placing the falsies on top.

Ouch! Toni Garrn’s Harper’s Bazaar Spain Cover Is ‘Bad on Every Level’ (Forum Buzz)

Toni Garrn may be seen on the arm of Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio lately, but it appears the model cannot catch a break when it comes to delivering good fashion shoots. Toni sat before the lens of Michelangelo di Battista for the cover of Spanish Harper’s Bazaar, but our feisty forum members aren’t having any of it. The 22-year-old German beauty sports wet hair and a Lanvin dress, while perched on the studio floor for the 60s-inspired cover story.

Harper's Bazaar November 2014 Toni Garrn

IMAGE: MODELS.COM VIA TFS FORUMS

The thread is rife with strong opinions from forum members. “This looks so bad! The pose, the hair, the background, the clothes, the shoes: I hate everything,” ranted Oxymore.

“This is really really bad! I have a lot of goodwill toward Vogue España so I won’t judge them too harshly but this one is pretty terrible,” shared A.D.C.

Bertrando3 even went so far as to say that the cover was “Bad on every level indeed…”

Also posting their disapproval was kokobombon, who commented, “This is so depressing imo… her expression and the blue hue is bringing me down.”

“This is terrible! It all looks so washed-up. Nothing is working here, the outfit, styling, Toni and the setting,” posted an underwhelmed Benn98.

MyNameIs was another member who wasn’t impressed: “OMG, this is horrid. One of the worst covers I’ve ever seen.”

“In the preview I genuinely thought it was a pastel drawing of Toni. She looks unreal, and not in a good way,” disapproved Cosmic Voices.

Harper’s Bazaar Spain certainly received a bashing this month, but are you a fan? Check out Toni’s cover story and join the discussion inside the thread here.

Chic Overalls: The Love List

The 90s are well and truly back. They have been for a while now, if you haven’t been paying attention, so you’d better learn to love it. First step? Some dungarees, or overalls, if you will. Rock the number with a slogan T-shirt or roll-neck tank underneath, slap on some Connies, chic slides or heeled ankle boots (whichever may be more your style) and you’re good to go.

Retailers and designers are jumping all over this super cute, slightly hipster trend, playing with prints, fabrics and lengths to spice up your typical denim overalls, which until recently you loathed. Check out our favourite picks from the web in the gallery below, so you too can jump back on the dungarees bandwagon. You know you want to.

Beyond Halloween: The Witchy Runway-Inspired Looks You’ll Want to Wear Year Round

Halloween is for amateurs. Every witch worth her salt knows that sorcery is a 365-day job. It’s not about a pillowcase full of chocolate-covered fructose or grocery store pumpkins in the shape of who knows what. It’s about the hocus pocus, the toil and boil. It’s about magic. And with magic comes responsibility.

You must not only act the part, but dress the part. That may mean 80s glam if you’re into covens that resemble The Witches of Eastwick or 90s gothic school girls if you’re a big, bad witch of the west like Nancy on The Craft. We tend to lean toward the aesthetic of the “white witch,” or what history refers to as a “wise woman” who practices magic for altruistic purposes. She’s cut from the same paranormal cloth as women like Stevie Nicks, whose nods to the occult in stylish numbers don’t look costumey. It’s a fine line to walk.

But now’s the time to be inspired by “real life” examples, and we’re looking to the below bloggers, models, TV presenters and singers for a little stylish know-how on how to rock a spring 2014 runway piece on city pavements or at lavish events.

Be Inspired by Spring Racing Outfits Straight from Caulfield Cup

Stylish racegoers flocked to Melbourne’s Caulfield Cup over the weekend, getting us excited for our own fashions on the field this spring racing season. Scroll through below to see our favourite looks from the day, and the range of looks to follow next time you hit the track.

Hamptons Vibes

The Ginger & Smart ladies rocked a holiday-luxe look in ladylike midi dresses. The textural white V-Neck piece and flowing monochromatic long-sleeved dress were fit for the Hamptons, with the wide-brimmed hats polishing it all off.

Moody Feminine

Circa-Now’s Tessa-Jay stepped out in a moody floral piece by Finders Keepers, teamed with black accessories for a tough-feminine look. The red lip, soft blonde waves and bow fascinator kept the fashion blogger looking ultra sweet, though.

Playful Chic

Rebecca Judd looked amazing in a below-the-knee red dress by Victoria Beckham, and kept it playful with metallic accessories including a Suzy O’ Rourke crown.

Metallics

Brooke Testoni wore a strapless bronze number by Zimmermann, and toned down the metallic piece with black accessories and barely there makeup.

Picnic Ready

David Jones ambassador Jessica Gomes looked too adorable in this red-and-white striped dress by Scanlan Theodore, teamed with a picnic-appropriate straw boater hat.

30 New Ways to Layer Up for the Office

Fendi, Elie Saab, Balmain

Stuck in a rut at the office? It’s time to shake things up. The easiest (and cheapest!) way to add new life into a tired wardrobe is to layer. Try wearing a vest with your suit or a high-waisted, flared skirt over a pair of fitted trousers. Kenzo and Balmain nailed this one on the runway. For added warmth, a white button-down or a neutral turtleneck looks low-key and classic under sleeveless dresses. Take a look at Peter Som’s fall lineup. He has all the inspiration you’ll need. For knitwear, oversized sweaters and midi skirts are begging to play together. Marc Jacobs had one of our favorite sweater-skirt combos of the season.

The key to layering is all about proportion and form. For instance, hemlines that hit at or above the knee look good with longer, leaner lines underneath. Accessories can play a major role, too. Belts allow you to pile on the layers without losing your shape. Feel free to loop in everything under the sun, from your blazers to your outerwear. The more you experiment with your wardrobe, the more looks you create. We like those odds, don’t you?

Miranda Kerr Steps Out of Her Comfort Zone in Embellishments at the 2014 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Event

Miranda Kerr

Photo: Stefanie Keenan/Getty

Miranda Kerr joined the ginormous list of celebrities at the 2014 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Event at LA’s Chateau Marmoment on Tuesday, October 21, stepping out of her comfort zone in an embellished 2-piece pantsuit.

We were pleasantly surprised. Miranda’s been sticking to ladylike pencil skirts, tough wet-look leathers or simple monochrome of late, but now this eye-catching ensemble has shifted her back into the spotlight for us. In fact, the supermodel could be our new poster girl for all things boho-luxe if she keeps it up.

We love that the matching beaded detail was heavy for the jacket, but tame down the bottom, and was brought together perfectly with a plain black tank singlet and single-pendant necklace. The bronze pointed-toe heels and black leather bag fitted in perfectly, as well as her tousled waves and fresh makeup.

Well done, Miranda, you ticked every box this time around.

Chris Hemsworth, Gigi Hadid Expected Down Under for Spring Racing Events

Chris Hemsworth Gigi Hadid

Things are about to get heated. Two major babes, Chris Hemsworth and Gigi Hadid, are expected in Australia early next month for two separate, but closely-timed spring racing events.

According to Herald Sun , Chris is expected be announced as a guest of the Johnnie Walker marquee at Derby Day on November 1. The Australian-born mega-hunk is believed to be a racing enthusiast, and will be home, presumably without wife Else Pataky, from Los Angeles on an extended break.

Now that we’ve made Aussie women more than happy, men too will be glad to know that it-girl Gigi will be at the Melbourne Cup just a few days later on November 4. “I’m so excited to get back to Australia,” Cody Simpson’s ex told Victoria Racing Club.

“The only time I’ve spent there is in the Gold Coast so I’m looking forward to experiencing Melbourne, and attending one of Australia’s biggest racing, fashion and social events in the Emirates Marquee,” she added.

Discover Mollie King’s Fall 2014 Edit for Folli Follie

If there’s one thing that Mollie King is great at when she’s not doing her day job as a pop star, it’s compiling a must-have edit for a fashion retailer. We loved the results when she collaborated with Oasis, and this fall she’s joined forces with Folli Follie to showcase her picks from its fall accessories and jewellery collection.

From sumptuous red to statement-making orange, the brand’s new handbags come awash with vibrant hues that are perfect for infusing your autumn wardrobe with a splash of colour. Or, of course, you can still play it classic with the options of black or neutral greys. The Heart4Heart bag is a great piece for adding a little bit of luxe into your everyday style thanks to its quilt-effect finish. If you’re looking for something that will take you from day to night, however, then Mollie’s pick of the timeless Nomad shoulder bag will tick that box.

If you’ve already got your new bag for fall sorted, then that just leaves some new season jewellery on your list, so take some inspiration from Mollie’s selection of simple bracelets and delicate necklaces in on-trend rose gold or silver. Sometimes it’s the simplest pieces that can create the biggest statement when completing an outfit.

Be it a new season handbag or outfit-completing jewellery, Mollie’s chosen a great range of pieces that could tie into a range of different styles, and with price points starting from around £25 for a bangle to £200 for a bag, you can buy into the new season’s trends without maxing out your credit cards. You can view Mollie’s complete edit at Folli Follie.

Adriana Lima Looks Ready for Battle on Vogue Paris’ November Cover (Forum Buzz)

Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott have shot their fair share of Vogue Paris covers. The November 2014 cover marks the fourth time this year for the Turkish photographic duo (not to mention the numerous others pre-2014). Emmanuelle Alt proved members of our forums wrong by suddenly becoming unpredictable: Adriana Lima unexpectedly graces the magazine’s latest cover, having only been featured inside the French title twice before.

Vogue Paris November 2014 Adriana Lima Mert & Marcus

IMAGE: VOGUE.FR VIA TFS FORUMS

But even with a striking headpiece from Dolce & Gabbana, our forum members still had gripes about the cover. “I like it, other than the boring background!” shared lukechapman.

“Could do with a different background but it’s really striking,” agreed Nepenthes, who went on to say, “Adriana’s eyes are piercing! I’m sure it will look amazing on newsstands!”

“GORGEOUS close-up shot for the beauty issue!” raved miguelalmeida.

“Adriana is a welcome change to the usual VP cover subjects,” enthused khyrk, clearly motivated by Alt’s cover girl choice this month.

Discussion took a turn when most of our forum members couldn’t help but compare it to other publications. “It looks amateurish, cheap, and trying so hard it might as well be a cover of Vogue Russia!!!” disapproved Miss Dalloway.

Also suggesting the cover resembles Russian Vogue was Creative, who questioned, “Vogue Russia is that you? Ugly and what a terrible layout.”

HeatherAnne didn’t appear to be impressed, either: “This magazine has lost any sense of identity; I never know what I’m going to see when I click on their thread, it’s completely disjointed from month to month. I feel as if Alt is grasping at straws at this point.”

Are you over or underwhelmed? See inside the thread and share your own opinion here.

A Retrospective Tribute to Oscar de la Renta’s 50-Year Career

Oscar de la Renta

Image: IMaxTree

The fashion industry has lost a legend. Last night, Oscar de la Renta passed away at the age of 82. Today, we celebrate the talented designer with a look back at his momentous career spanning more than five decades.

Oscar de la Renta began his love affair with fashion at the tender age of 18, while studying painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. Soon after, he landed a prestigious internship at Balenciaga and a position as couture assistant at Lanvin under Antonio del Castillo. In 1963, upon the advice of Vogue editrix Diana Vreeland, de la Renta secured a design job at Arden for two years to try his hand at ready-to-wear. Two years later, he decamped to take over Jane Derby and launch his signature line. His love for couture always remained, however. He returned to the sector from 1993 to 2002 to design the haute couture collections for Balmain.

Throughout his almost 50-year career, the dynamic designer dressed everyone from First Ladies to Hollywood’s most notable celebs — all while expanding his company into a full-fledged lifestyle brand; he debuted fragrance in 1977, accessories in 2001, home goods in 2002 and bridal in 2006. Preciously, he’s designed bridal under the ODLR signature collection.

The designer’s talent was recognized near and far. He received the Coty Award in 1967 and 1968, took home the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990 and was named ambassador-at-large in his motherland, the Dominican Republic.

Naomi Watts Makes us Feel Inferior as She Doubles up on Givenchy in New York

Naomi Watts

Photo: Alberto Reyes/WENN

Naomi Watts has been snapped on the streets of New York sporting two black-leather Givenchy bags, including a cross-body tassled purse and an overnight-type bag on her strong elbow, because just one simply isn’t enough. At the risk of looking like a bag lady, the Australian actress showed she was anything but in her classy, expensive-looking getup.

Naomi stuck to a contrasting nude-and-black outfit, which included a cream wrap-around coat, black wet-look leggings, strappy pumps and a wide-brim hat. Even her black toenails were coordinated into the colour palette, because matching every last detail is all the rage right now.

If you think the nudes and black were well thought out, then take into account the hints of gold, including her shoes detail, bag zippers and buckles, bracelet, and, well, her keys, which she’s also cleverly incorporated. All of a sudden the gold-adorned Givenchy double-up makes perfect sense. But, really, she could’ve slipped the baby purse into the bigger bag, just to make us feel better about ourselves.
