Where to Spend (and Where to Save) on This Season’s Top Trends

Not all fashion is created equal. Some styles last for years and are worth investing in, while others simply stay for the season. Trends may come and go, but it's the style staples that have staying power and are worth the extra dough. We consulted a few style experts to find out what's worth splurging on this season and what isn't.

A Lesson in Lightweight Layering: Spring’s Top Coats to Start Sporting Now

This season, global warming is giving the style set a reason to wear their trendy toppers in summer. With the fashion forecast calling for longline dustercoats, minimalist cocoon overcoats, waterproof trenches and boyfriend-borrowed topcoats, thanks to the season’s unexplained and unpredictable weather, designers are taking a practical, feminine and Fifties approach to covering up. In blooming floral treatments, cotton-candy pastels, geometric checks and nude neutrals, we are in store for more than just showers this spring, since these coats bring out the runway rainbow.

Earth Day Delights: the Best of Organic Clothing

Think wearing earth-conscious clothing means you have to look like a hippie from the 60s? Not unless you specifically want to. Our favorite nouveau ethical goods combine both fashionable form and organic function (whole or partial). Nowadays, these goods can't be told apart from conventional pieces — and we love it that way. This Earth Day, go organic — and go modern organic, where you'll look way better than your traditional hemp-outfitted earth-loving brethren. Below, some of our favorite organic pieces.

In Praise of Lorde: The Singer Calls Out Fashion Magazine for Giving Her a New Nose

It was less than a year ago that Fashion magazine was scorned for transforming the stunning Olivia Wilde into a wax work figure on its cover, but now the style bible is coming under fire again for giving Lorde a Photoshopped nose job.

The “Royals” singer is famous for taking media to task over their retouching, calling out a photo agency for airbrushing her skin only in January. Now she’s blasting Fashion , tweeting, “Apart from the fact that I’m pretty sure this magazine gave me a new nose (:|), I really like this photo,” in reference to one of the editorial shots.

Lorde Fashion Magazine cover

Image via Fashion

Lorde graces the mag’s May issue, where her cover photo looks a far cry from her usually angsty persona. Her hair lightened considerably, the 17-year-old songstress wears a heavy metal Dolce & Gabbana dress with matching earrings, topped with au naturel makeup and a sunkissed glow. She looks demure and distinctly anti-Lorde, the irony of which is only exacerbated by the accompanying interview.

On her public image and her musical role models, the New Zealand star says, “I'm drawn to women who aren't painted in history as sweet figures. Patti Smith was prickly. She was frustrated. She didn't take people’s s***. There's no better music idol for young women, because there is a lot of pressure for us to be really positive all the time. Every photo shoot I do, I get asked for big smiles, and I shouldn't have to be that way.”

This is one seriously smart and sassy chick, which is all the more devastating that she’s being edited in such a way. I feel like the cover will only fuel Lorde’s anti-shopping stance further, but to that I say, bring on the fall-out!

Gemma Arterton Looks Stunning in Prada at Laurence Olivier Awards

gemma-arterton-olivier-awards-620

Gemma Arterton really won everyone over at last night’s Laurence Olivier awards at the Royal Opera House in London, and she wasn’t even nominated.

Taking her turn to present the theatre’s most prestigious awards last night with co-host actor Stephen Mangan, the 28-year-old actress looked the image of sophistication in a seafoam-hued Prada bias cut gown with boat neckline and three-quarter-length sleeves. Against the true red of the carpet, Arterton’s bold monochrome look really made an impact as she entered the awards ceremony.

Her whole look was simply flawless from the carefully chosen Faraone Mennella jewels to the voluminous swept hair, showing off her enviable bone structure.

Although we are not going into a discussion about the obsession with Miss Arterton’s curves, we cannot be anything but jealous of her silhouette, as well as the fact that it is always fantastic to see a woman with boobs wearing couture.

Despite not being nominated at the awards ceremony, Gemma has certainly been busy this year when it comes to the stage. After kicking off 2014 in John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi, she is now set to star in the forthcoming stage production of Made in Dagenham at the Adelphi theatre in London later this year, which tells the tale of female factory workers in 1968 fighting for equal pay.

No doubt she was thrilled to see the likes of Dame Judy Dench, Hayley Atwell, Anna Chancellor and Lesley Manville all nominated for the coveted best actress award, with Lesley Manville taking home the accolade for her performance in Ghosts at the Almeida theatre.

Highlights from Fashion Week Australia, Day 4

Alice McCall

Alice McCall MBFWA SS 14/15 runway

For Alice McCall’s 10th year of showing at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, the designer dipped into her lucid dreams for inspiration. “This season, it’s serious, but it’s an existential answer; [inspiration] really came from my dreams. In my dreams we are flying.” The collection wavered from floaty, angelic, cloud-like whites and undulating designs in pretty pastels to printed pieces in collaboration with American collage artists Eugenia Loli and Beth Hoeckel who mashed up Egyptian, space and aquatic themes in a surreal manner. Summer also sees Alice McCall introduce footwear for the first time via a nude stiletto sandal.

Dion Lee

Dion Lee is having a good week. The designer was just awarded the Australian Fashion Laureate for the newly created womenswear category. Then, his debut at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia for his diffusion line Dion Lee II attracted a start studded crowd including Megan Washington, Rachel Finch, Shanina Shaik, Charlotte Best and Lindy Klim. This time around, Lee looks to the masculine via bomber jackets, shirting and pinstripe (seemingly an emerging print trend which has been spotted several times this week). Ribbed sweaters, 90s style denim and turtlenecks rounded out the sporty daywear collection.

Bringing a Plus-One? What He Should Wear to the Wedding (Besides a Tux)

It's that time again. You know, when you start getting large, flat, envelopes in the mail made from high-quality paper. The ones that contain an invitation to bring a plus-one and celebrate the nuptials of a couple you know. Some people like to call it wedding season. And while you've been keeping up on what's happening in wedding guest (and bridesmaid) attire, your date is less likely to have done so.

Why not help him out a little and provide some inspiration for what to wear on your best friend's big day? You want your man looking dapper, and whether or not he's willing to admit to it, we bet he does too. We pulled together four wedding looks for guys that will have him feeling every bit the handsome man he is. He might even be more willing to hit the dance floor, knowing he looks so good.

The Everygirl Guide to Festival Dressing

It'd be nice to buy a pair of teeny tiny cut-off denim shorts that barely cover our backside a la Kate Moss or Alexandria Ambrosio on her way to Glastonbury. Or a crochet bralet that offers zero support. Maybe even pick up a tie-dye tee so cut-up it's barely covering us. It would be nice, wouldn't it? Actually, the more we think about it, why would we want to run around an outdoor music festival half naked? Let the supermodels get their sunburn on and be totally covered in mud head to toe in their little clothes.

A better plan for festival dressing might be to actually try to pair class with our bohemian vibes and bring back real style instead of looks that seem to have come from a bad 70s-themed Halloween party. Lightweight wide-leg pants keep things breezy and comfortable and make us think of Ali McGraw instead of the cast of Boogie Nights. Our crochet top is lined where it counts. Bangles, pretty chiffon maxi dresses, fringe details and easy printed shorts are all on the festival detail. Get your inspiration below — and don't be surprised if someone turns away from the barely-dressed model off-duty standing next to you in line and asks, "Can I take your picture?"

Meet the VAMFF Target National Graduate Showcase Finalists

graduates

Young designer success stories aren’t written in a day, but you can’t say it’s for want of competition – or, in Australia, competitions.

The latest in a string of initiatives aimed at getting emerging fashion designers off the ground was the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival’s annual National Graduate Showcase. With Target stepping in as the naming rights sponsor (taking over from Sportsgirl), this year’s talent lineup was especially dense with designers worth keeping your eye on.

The most satisfying aspect of the show was the good mix of commercial appeal, understated luxury, and unbridled creativity. From the latter camp was Chin Hau Tay’s Beware Bear! collection, which combined tartan and red faux fur to deliciously exaggerated effect. Anna-Marie Gruber’s architectural knitwear was almost just as outré (cozy loungewear this isn’t) and abstract shapes.

graduates-landscape

Other standouts of the show included Edwina Sinclair, who founded her own label in 2011 and opened a brick-and-mortar store in 2013. But it’s not just her resume that looks promising – Sinclair’s confection pastels and bubble-like embellishments made for a bright collection in both senses of the word, yet every piece was so beautifully cut as to please even the pastel-averse eye. They’re also like little else on the local landscape.

The winner of the showcase will receive a $25,000 cash grant plus the opportunity to have their collection produced and sold in Target stores. The final decision will be a joint one between a panel of judges and the voting public.

Here’s the complete list of finalists:

  • Anna-Marie Gruber

  • Chin Hau Tay

  • Edwina Sinclair

  • Gabrielle Brown

  • Juliette Booth

  • Lillian Chan

  • Molly Younger

  • Roxane Chan

  • Tan Thanh Trieu

  • Victoria Thaniotis

  • Wing Chiang

  • Yan Wang
