Saint Laurent Spring 2014: A Mixed Bag from Slimane

imaxtree

imaxtree

Hedi Slimane offered up an eclectic mix for Saint Laurent this season. The designer's offering ranged from skintight leather pants, leather minis, biker jackets and one-shoulder flame motif tops, to glistening animal prints, sheer tops, a variety of 80s prom-like one-shoulder minis and takes on the brand's classic smocking and lip print.

With the exception of a military-inspired jacket and a deep V black jumper, these weren't clothes that screamed high-brow luxury, but they will undoubtedly draw love from a young, high-rolling party set.

Haider Ackermann Spring 2014: A Handsome Woman

imaxtree

imaxtree

Haider Ackermann has an affinity for the word handsome, which tied into the androgynous feel of his Spring 2014 collection.

Done in a dark palette heavy on high-shine metallic shades, there were cigarette pants, long tuxedo jackets, oversized outerwear, loose Bermuda shorts, baggy trousers and a lot of fabric layering. Don't let the menswear inspiration fool you, however, this was one of the designer's sexiest outings with plenty of exposed backs, deep V-necklines and bare chests via the use of sheer fabrics and cut-outs. Further, while most of the collection was intricately crafted with layers of chiffon and careful pleats, the designer also offered some minimalist looks via, for example, a strapless black jumper and an off-the-shoulder black dress.

A.F. Vandevorst Spring 2014: Dark and Dirty

imaxtree

imaxtree

The A.F. Vandevorst signature look was well represented in the brand's spring collection, even if it wasn't exclusively black (though there was, of course, plenty of that). The fittingly springtime looks that began the show were light-colored and light in spirit: relaxed silhouettes or tailoring in lighter fabrics. There was a good amount of studding (and even metal pasties for modesty beneath a sheer top) but even that felt surprisingly weightless, at ease. Random tufts of fabric and weird draping were ever-present, as per usual.

The darker movement began about halfway through the show (think a short-sleeved leather midi-length coat and dark pants seemingly pre-stained with dirt from bucolic revelry). In fact, this decoration scheme (pre-attached dirt stains) was a running theme—even on jackets and both aspects of a two-piece suit) and was kinda clever, rather funny. You really have to hand it to the brand for making the impossible—light-looking leather, pre-stained clothing—completely covetable.

Chalayan Spring 2014: Towel-Inspired Dresses and Innovative Umbrellas

imaxtree

imaxtree

Leave it to Hussein Chalayan to come up with the world's coolest umbrellas; umbrellas cum hats, in fact, and they stood out as one of the most memorable accessories of the season. The beachy-feel of the umbrellas tied into the summery collection rife with sailor stripes, many of which appeared as though they were printed on terrycloth towels wrapped around swimwear, making for a variety of unique dresses.

Seaside landscape and painterly prints were also on tap as were roomy neutral-toned separates and languid dresses with sculpted and folded details, culminating in a collection that successfully mixed innovation with wearability.

Nina Ricci Spring 2014: Feminine and Romantic

imaxtree

imaxtree

There was plenty to love in Peter Copping's feminine and romantic Spring 2014 Nina Ricci collection.

Done nearly entirely in various shades of white with some floral worked in, there was something for romantics of every kind with looks ranging from the delicately pleated and clean-lined, to the heavily embellished with ruffles and sequins. Lace, a Copping favorite, was featured prominently in the season's feather-light collection, making for beautiful panels on mixed texture dresses.

Balmain Spring 2014: Power Dressing with a Sexy Twist

imaxtree

imaxtree

There was an 80s/early 90s feel to much of this season's Balmain collection. In addition to the sculpted power shoulder that has become the brand's signature, Spring 2014 brought with it heavy gold chains, high waist skirts finished with big gold buttons and paired with coordinating jackets, quilted separates, colorful herringbone, a check print, heavy metallic belts, draped denim and off-the-shoulder tops and dresses. As a counter balance, there were plenty of skin-grazing sexy minis, many with drop waists and sheer crystal-embellished skirts, all of which were very high on sex appeal.

Gareth Pugh Spring 2014: More Commercial, Still Fantastic

imaxtree

imaxtree

While there will be some that lament Gareth Pugh going for more wearable looks these past few seasons, it's hard to blame the designer for looking to have both editorial and commercial success. Further, he seems to be doing it while staying true to his fashion-as-art backbone. Case in point, while his Spring 2014 collection had ostrich feather headdresses, architectural oversized wraps and coats with armor-like oversized shoulders, there was plenty in the way of wearable separates.

Long lean skirts, fitted trousers, draped kimono-like jackets, coats with oversized collars and high-shine lean trousers all made for fantastic statement pieces that plenty of women will by dying to wear.

7 Of-the-Moment Updates to the Classic Crisp White Shirt

Clean, crisp, classic. The white button down shirt is a style staple that knows no bounds and transcends all. It’s the most worn, most cherished and least trendy garment in one’s closet, yet the white shirt is one the fashion-forward set can’t seem to get enough of. Recognized as the workingwoman’s uniform along side her power suit, the white shirt also belongs to the schoolgirl, the full-time mother and more. The power of plain ensures this chicly, understated staple is as buttoned up and unbuttoned as you wish. The question then lies in how to refresh and reinvent it season after season. This fall, designers rose to the challenge with a number of new shapes and silhouettes in re-cut revamps to prove simple sophistication is always very much in style. Reinterpret a timeless silhouette once more with these contemporary remixes of the classic, crisp white shirt to reveal that the menswear-inspired original is just as wearable as before.

Giorgio Armani Spring 2014: Never Boring, Always Sophisticated

imaxtree

imaxtree

Leave it to Giorgio Armani to make the strongest case for Bermuda short suits this season. The designer included a handful of them paired with a variety of neutral-toned blazer and blouse options before continuing with his strong daywear offering. Mixing colors, textures and patterns, the sophisticated offering never lacked in visual interest.

Watercolor prints, pastels and bright pops of fuchsia, pink and blue balanced out taupes and black, while silhouettes were fitted but never stiff.

Moschino Spring 2014: A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Quirky

imaxtree

imaxtree

Moschino is a label truly able to mix concept pieces with complete accessibility—a noble feat. This season's runway show combined the brand's signature of not taking itself too seriously with a huge 30th anniversary celebration, complete with more than a few famous faces.

Clothing-wise, this season was a little country (cowboy hats, cow appliques), a little bit quirky (mid-century shirtdresses accessorized with a pearl-and-croissant necklace). Most looks were shown side-by-side in two iterations—for the good persona, the bad persona. Think pretty frilly dresses next to bra top outfits finished with belts that read "bad girl." This duality direction was a neat way to see a lot of great clothes quickly. But don't think that Moschino is done rabble rousing on this big occasion. Among the really lovely, accessible looks were the brand's staple quirked-up pieces: a floaty gown made of plastic bags, a silkscreened T-shirt depicting a stereotypical Italian meal. That Moschino can show both straight looks and semi-ironic ones, and have them all be covetable speaks to the house's staying power. We're thinking that this anniversary certainly won't be the last major one Moschino ever celebrates.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2014: Absolutely Stunning

imaxtree

imaxtree

Replete with ruffles, pleats and sculpted details, Tomas Maier's dark Spring 2014 was absolutely stunning.

The collection could have easily come across as overworked or heavy, but no matter if the silhouettes were long and lean or voluminous, bustled and diagonally draped, each piece bore incredible sophistication and ease thanks to astute fabric choices and hem lengths. Rife with looks that were at once fashion-forward, wearable and timeless, Bottega Veneta continues to prove that it's the go-to luxury brand for women who want to stand out without being draped in crystal embroidered thigh-high slit dresses.

Among the most stunning pieces were a maroon fringed cocktail dress with a deep V-neck, layered and ruffled skirts, an army green ruffled jacket with coordinating shorts and a variety of wide sleeve blouses.

Roberto Cavalli Spring 2014: 1920s Glam Goes Boho and Rock

imaxtree

imaxtree

True to his brand, there may have been snakeskin aplenty and strappy knee-high gladiator sandals, but this season Roberto Cavalli surprised by loosening up his silhouettes.

Showing a slew of loosely draped dresses and skirts, the designer's ornate collection had a 1920s Old Hollywood meets rocker meets bohemian princess feel. Among the most memorable pieces were long fur soles, printed caftan dresses, lace-up pants, leather biker jackets, layered gowns and knit dresses, all of which are sure to please the designer's loyal set of daring fashion shoppers.

Alberta Ferretti Spring 2014: Plenty of Florals for Spring

images: imaxtree

images: imaxtree

Flowers embellished nearly every look in Alberta Ferretti's Mexican-tinged Spring 2014 collection. Contrary to what florals might conjure up, however, the collection wasn't run-of-the-mill.

Covering the color gamut, the most striking looks were the white ones that opened and closed the show. Beautifully embroidered with colorful flowers, dresses came in a range of silhouettes included a loose T-shirt style, a strapless column, flirty minis and a long-sleeve gown, all of which were wearable while striking a fashion-forward balance (think embroidered flowers that gave the illusion of suspenders). Sandwiched between the white pieces, the designer showed black and rich jewel toned looks.

Not into florals? The pieces that weren't embroidered, printed or finished with floral lace, came colorfully striped in both horizontal and vertical colorblocked iterations.

Gucci Spring 2014: Sexy, Black Tie Sportswear

images: imaxtree

images: imaxtree

Gucci will always be sexy, even if they go in a sportswear direction, and that was exactly the case in this season's lineup. Frida Giannini told The Daily Beast that she was focused on creating “new proportions and detailing to turn gymnastic shapes into style essentials.” Obviously she did not have grey cotton sweatpants and sweatshirts in mind.

The designer's inspiration translated into loose silhouettes, drop waists, sheer triangle bra tops (they came layered under everything from tops to gowns), mesh tops and baggy trousers, all of which were done in a dark palette. Many of the looks came highly embellished and fashioned out of high-shine fabrics, making them fit for black tie and red carpet affairs. On the handbag front, most of the styles came finished with long fringe, which served to add even more movement to the season's drapey looks.

Emilio de la Morena Spring 2014: Fashion-Forward, but Wearable

When a designer can show a top with pleated fan-like breast cups and have it come off as sophisticated, you know you're looking at a unique talent. So was the case in Emilio de la Morena's lineup this season where the designer stuck to the running theme for Spring 2014 and showed a loosely draped collection of fashion-forward, but wholly wearable pieces.

Among the standouts were a duo of long loose vests, dual colored paneled outerwear and an embellished crop top with a coordinating high-waist skirt. The one misstep? A handful of cocktail dresses that appeared overly worked with clashing colors, ruffle and fan embellishments.

Erdem Spring 2014: Textural Experimentation in Black and White

imaxtree

imaxtree

Erdem Moralioğlu has always favored pretty prints for his namesake line. Even when he's letting his darker side breathe—as with last fall's collection—he seemingly can't help but sneak in some artful eye candy, typically watercolored flowers in light colors. For his spring collection, though, Moralioğlu finally seemed more ready to all but abandon the color, instead focusing more on textural experimentation.

This was a largely black and white collection, and though unexpected, not unwelcome. A safari-inspired iridescent white jacket (paired with a center-slit skirt) opened the show. The sheer, lace-encrusted long-sleeved midi dresses felt utterly Erdem, though colorless, and were made a bit cheeky with the designer's makeshift personal crest, a script embroidered "E" bound by his year of birth. His outfits feel like a really smart collage, an amalgam of sheer fabrics, random pattern-comprising embroidery and floaty feather accents; this is the edge that keeps the line from going into the too-pretty zone. Indeed, there were some decidedly rougher elements, some pretty-meets-tough pieces in the collection: an embroidered moto jacket, sharp buttoned-up collars that finished off reluctant tomboy looks. Meanwhile, the knee-skimming white jacket, whose stripes were alternating sheer fabric and woven tweed, was just plain cool. And Moralioğlu, of course, couldn't finish the collection without just a little color, on the sheer-sleved floral-embroidered bomber—he repeated the stitching on a floor-grazing gown.

This show is a testament to Moralioğlu pushing his own boundaries and leaving his colorful comfort zone—a clear visual sign that rich hues need not define the designer.

Christopher Kane Spring 2014: Beautiful Science

kane-ss2014-details

images: imaxtree

Christopher Kane is a London Fashion Week darling for good reason. In less than a decade, Kane's positioned himself among England's designing elite, creating clothes that are not only pretty but also a bit quietly subversive, always utterly unique.

For spring, Kane was feeling scientific, interpreting the expected floral of the season through his completely original purview. Instead of simply plastering patterns of beautiful flowers on easy silhouettes, Kane takes it about a hundred steps beyond, using both flower petals and scientific flower diagrams to insane effect. To start, Kane used enormous petal-shaped contrasting accents to decorate blazers and dresses; not content to just adorn lapels or show off a bit of underboob, Kane used these petals to also construct necklines in a really cool way.

From there Kane moved on to—what will undoubtedly be best-selling—pastel crewneck sweatshirts that simply said "flower," and later, "petal," cut out in lace. A group of pretty dresses in stark white and translucent green fabrics aren't exactly what they seem to be—all the straps are held in place with roach clips. Later, dresses are given modesty with some nicely placed pleating. And though this section is brief, the trio of looks featuring a rainbow-tinsel fabric (boxy top, boxy sleeveless dress, boxy long-sleeved dress) are really just so cool.

Next, Kane gets to the meat of his little science experiment, by copying actual textbook-ready diagrams onto his clothing. It's Kane's deft hand that makes this so successful: a silky pale-green top with flower diagram cut-outs (featuring labeled parts, arrows) could easily veer toward the kitschy, but here it just makes sense as part of the designer's cool canon. A midi lavender skirt with this cut-out diagram repeated forms its own new floral pattern—totally meta. The Kane essence really came to a head with his outfit that paired a sequined/embroidered flower diagram sweatshirt with a matching midi skirt. It's the nexus of the Kane look, the combination of effortlessly cool, accessible top and weird-but-elegant bottom. The show ended with pieces that only compounded on this look—enormous patches of middle-sliced flowers and oxygen-path-indicated arrows, all topping sheer dresses. They were busy but in a jubilant way, very smartly done.

Leave it to Christopher Kane, the one and only, to make a floral for spring that felt truly fresh.
