Dennis Basso knows how to kick off Bridal Week with a bang. On Wednesday afternoon, the designer served up a hearty dose of glamour (and champagne on tap!) at his Fall 2015 show at Kleinfeld’s. Before the runway rolled out, we snagged a gabfest backstage.
theFashionSpot: Did we just hear Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” as your finale song?
Dennis Basso: I love Taylor Swift! I like how she’s actually evolved in a very short time from this sweet, young, country singer into a major mega-star worldwide.
tFS: What inspired your bridal collection this season?
DB: The European capitals of the world. I wanted to take the European bride’s vision — alluring, a little covered up yet sexy — and translate it for today’s modern, American bride. It’s a glamorous collection.
tFS: You got married a couple years ago…
DB: My anniversary is November 22. It’ll be three years. We were the first same-sex marriage in The Pierre’s 83-year history. We’re going to celebrate in Mustique. Very quiet with some close friends, having a chill time.
tFS: What was on your wedding menu?
DB: We had a big reception where we created a supper club with buffet tables. We served braised short ribs, which are our favorite. Then we had an unbelievable amount of food from seafood to Italian to Asian. The cake was done by Sylvia Weinstock, it was a series of quilted boxes wrapped in a big bow. Some layers had custard, others were red velvet.
tFS: Do you remember your first date with your husband, Michael [Cominotto]?
DB: I do! We had known each other for a long time, and I had invited him to a party. We started the evening going out as friends and by the end of the evening, we were on a date. That’s the way to go.
