Vionnet Shows a Nature-Inspired Fall 2014 Collection with Mixed Results (Runway Review)

The Inspiration: Designer Goga Ashkenazi told WWD that he was inspired by the idea of “architecture versus nature.” In keeping with that, a tent in the Tuileries was set up with 20,000 fresh tulips.

The Look: The show very clearly reflected the designer’s inspiration, unfortunately it translated into mixed results. The styling for some of the looks — as with a knit turquoise sweater paired with a tulip-inspired beige skirt — had some hiccups, and there’s questionable appeal in the felt looks that opened the show (not to mention the collection's oddball sock-like and furry shoes). Similarly, high-waist pleated pants and mink tops will be exceedingly difficult to pull off for most women and a few of the looks suffered from tailoring issues — some appeared too tight, as with a green and navy paneled slit dress, while others appeared too large, as with a navy quilted long jacket. More success was found in the stiffly geometric paneled tops, draped jumpers and monochrome below-the-knee pleated skirts, but whether those offered enough luxury appeal to convince someone to forgo Zara and splurge remains to be seen.

The Accessories: Shoes this season were on the oddball side with many of the models wearing either flat or heeled multicolored fur shoes.

The Beauty: Clean faces, pale lips and clumped-together lashes heavy on mascara were complemented by free-flowing hair.

The Takeaway: Vionnet is trying hard to make a comeback, but this collection showed the brand still has a way to go.

Concepts Is Dropping the 'Ikhet' Kyrie 5 on Christmas,For the latest episode of Complex's Sneaker Shopping, host Joe La Puma hit up Concepts in Boston with All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving. The Celtics superstar discussed things like his affordable signature line, its appeal to the younger demographic, and incorporating classic Nike SB colorways into some of PEs. He even can be seen rocking the upcoming "Purple Lobster" Concepts x Nike SB Dunk Low during the interview, and was gifted a pair of the boutique's "Blue Lobster" Dunk Low from 2008. The major highlight of the episode is Irving giving a first look at the Concepts x Nike Kyrie 5 "Ikhet." "These guys are unbelievable creatives. What I love is that Concepts has always identified specific cultural touchpoints and pushed things that make them their own," said Irving in an official press release from Nike.Concepts' Deon Point took inspiration from the all-seeing eye and the point guard's Hamsa hand tattoo to look back at Ancient Egypt and the pyramids. The result is a take on his fifth signature that features a tan upper, gold accents, diamond-like branding hits, Egyptian hieroglyphs on each heel, a red tongue to represent the nose of the Sphinx before it decayed, and a purple midsole to symbolize the color of the sunset against the pyramids.
Don C Looks to ’90s Hoops Films to Inspire Nike KD 12 Collab,After much of his work with Jordan Brand, Don C is shifting to Nike Basketball with a budding Nike KD 12 collaboration. The reported joint release is inspired by ’90s hoops films Above the Rim and White Men Can’t Jump. The shoe takes from the Above the Rim movie font for its heel script while a faded cycling hat worn by Sidney Dean — played by Wesley Snipes in White Men Can’t Jump — inspires the shoe’s holistic color scheme. It’s unclear if any other nods from each film find placement on the exterior of the KD 12 shoe, yet those two alone are enough to strike a nostalgic balance for this modern design.
