When it’s cold outside, the last thing we want to do is spend time looking after our hair. We’re more concerned with chucking a beanie on and running out the door into the nearest vicinity of warmth. Although we give into the desperation at the time, it’s causing some serious problems for our lady locks.
Sydney-based celebrity hair stylist and owner of Dario Salon, Dario Cotroneo, has taken the time to share his nifty tips for how to show your hair the tender loving care it craves over winter. He’s worked with the likes of Gracie Otto and Laura Dundovic, so in Dario we trust.
Hat Hair
We get it, sometimes the beanie just doesn’t come off over winter. But for the moments that your hair does get the chance to breathe, full your hair up with some dry volume spray over the top area. It’s a quick fix, according to Dario.
Dull hair
During colder months, our hair is exposed to more heating than it’s used to. Because of that, hair can lose its natural shine and not reflect light. Dario recommends incorporating a hair mask into your routine, just once a week for 10 minutes. You should also invest in a heat protectant spritz before straightening, curling and blowdrying.
Dry scalp
Dandruff and itchiness of the scalp can be a reflection of less moisture in the air. Enter anti-dandruff shampoo. Plus, a hydrating oil can help soothe the irritation, just make sure you brush your hair and scalp to distribute the natural oils throughout the hair.
Breakage and Split Ends
Winter and split ends come hand-in-hand, but there’s a really easy solution called hydration. Just apply a deep conditioning oil to your hair and give a little more attention to your ends. You can also add protein-rich foods into your diet for super-strong strands. And we know it’s cold out there, but don’t forget to visit your hairdresser and get a haircut once every six weeks. It will work wonders.
Tangles and Static Hair
Layering sounds good in theory, but it’s causing your hair some serious grief. Putting jumpers on and pulling them off causes friction, tangling and static charge. Anti-frizz cream and moisturising detanglers are the key.
