Black, White and Red All Over at Armani Privé Fall 2014

The Scene: Chloë Grace Moretz, Juliette Binoche, Kate Hudson, Pink and, of course, Sophia Loren were all on hand to take in the show, which kicked off with a big, black lacquer box that released a red glow.

The Look: This season, Armani worked with a mix of fabrics, patterns and embellishments, meaning his collection ranged from polka dot sheer tops to tops and dresses with squiggling shapes protruding out of them. Red dominated the collection, which also included a hearty dose of black and white. As reflected by the designer’s color choice, the collection was well-balanced between minimally embellished and monochrome looks on one end and heavily embellished and patterned ones on the other. Sculpted short and long suits, cape-like jackets and pleated shorts made for luxurious daywear, while the designer’s series of red gowns — many of which came finished with super-sized fluffy tulle skirts and bodices or veil overlays — made for dramatic eveningwear. In a nod to the collection’s versatility, however, many of the most out-of-the-box looks, the ones with protruding squiggles that brought to mind high school solar system science projects, for example, were layered over classic bustier dresses.

The Accessories: Structured handbags, snakeskin clutches, veils in various shapes and sizes, black latex gloves and pointed shoes with ankle straps or ties accessorized the streamlined collection.

The Beauty: Models had their hair pulled back into an off-center French twist, a look which sometimes came topped with a veil for dramatic effect. Eyes were winged out, lips were finished with red lipstick and brows were full and straight.

The Takeaway: Even when showing futuristic and dramatic looks, Armani managed to keep his designs ladylike, making for a versatile collection that will appeal to a wide age demographic — fitting given that couture clients are getting younger and younger.
