Olympia Le-Tan Performs a Little Magic for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

The Scene: The international queen of the book clutch takes on magic as her next themed collection — complete with a gigantic magician's top hat as runway backdrop.

The Inspiration: The magician's assistant and the magician's co-star (the ivory-colored bunny, of course).

The Look: Since Olympia Le-Tan has branched out from simply making embroidered felt clutches, she's taken each clothing collection as an opportunity for extreme kitsch and theme-abiding. Each piece is themed, but Le-Tan is really conscious about making these things also wearable (even if some are a little too fun for everyday use). The case was the same here, where the theme was magic featuring sheer leotards with strategic bunny-shaped opaqueness, tops made of overlapping sequin playing cards and blazers with heart-shaped lapels. She goes from extreme to fun to downright realistic, sometimes in the same look, so you can't completely dismiss her pieces as complete fantasy. Other pieces of note were the tops with "abracadabra" written or embroidered in various fonts and colors as well as a blue, long-sleeved dress depicting a punishing game of 52 Card Pickup.

The Accessories: Top hats and illustrated scarves for the head with magic guide book clutches and the most themed bag of all — a top hat body with bunny-ear handles — for the hands. There were also embroidered, themed belts showcasing the top hat bunnies meeting in a kiss.

The Beauty: Smoky, sparkly eyes and a low ponytail with a nice, retro feel.

The Casting: Le-Tan's sister Cleo closed the show in a furry leotard bunny suit, complete with floppy ears.

The Takeaway: Olympia Le-Tan expertly skirts the line between conceptual and realistic fashion, while still managing to make it all pretty damn fun.
