Saint Laurent Spring 2014: A Mixed Bag from Slimane

Hedi Slimane offered up an eclectic mix for Saint Laurent this season. The designer's offering ranged from skintight leather pants, leather minis, biker jackets and one-shoulder flame motif tops, to glistening animal prints, sheer tops, a variety of 80s prom-like one-shoulder minis and takes on the brand's classic smocking and lip print.

With the exception of a military-inspired jacket and a deep V black jumper, these weren't clothes that screamed high-brow luxury, but they will undoubtedly draw love from a young, high-rolling party set.

Haider Ackermann Spring 2014: A Handsome Woman

Haider Ackermann has an affinity for the word handsome, which tied into the androgynous feel of his Spring 2014 collection.

Done in a dark palette heavy on high-shine metallic shades, there were cigarette pants, long tuxedo jackets, oversized outerwear, loose Bermuda shorts, baggy trousers and a lot of fabric layering. Don't let the menswear inspiration fool you, however, this was one of the designer's sexiest outings with plenty of exposed backs, deep V-necklines and bare chests via the use of sheer fabrics and cut-outs. Further, while most of the collection was intricately crafted with layers of chiffon and careful pleats, the designer also offered some minimalist looks via, for example, a strapless black jumper and an off-the-shoulder black dress.

A.F. Vandevorst Spring 2014: Dark and Dirty

The A.F. Vandevorst signature look was well represented in the brand's spring collection, even if it wasn't exclusively black (though there was, of course, plenty of that). The fittingly springtime looks that began the show were light-colored and light in spirit: relaxed silhouettes or tailoring in lighter fabrics. There was a good amount of studding (and even metal pasties for modesty beneath a sheer top) but even that felt surprisingly weightless, at ease. Random tufts of fabric and weird draping were ever-present, as per usual.

The darker movement began about halfway through the show (think a short-sleeved leather midi-length coat and dark pants seemingly pre-stained with dirt from bucolic revelry). In fact, this decoration scheme (pre-attached dirt stains) was a running theme—even on jackets and both aspects of a two-piece suit) and was kinda clever, rather funny. You really have to hand it to the brand for making the impossible—light-looking leather, pre-stained clothing—completely covetable.
