Behind the Scenes: A NYFW Preview of Spring Studios

If you’re familiar with London’s fashion and design scene, you’re probably familiar with Spring Studios. If you attended Calvin Klein’s show last season, you’re most likely familiar with Spring’s NYC outpost. But come this New York Fashion Week Fall 2014, there’s virtually no way this place will escape your radar.

Spring Studios will play host to no less than six shows this season, including Calvin Klein, Diane von Furstenberg and Michael Kors. Being the fashion busybody I am, I ventured downtown to the still-very-raw space on 7 St. John’s Lane (between Beach and Laight Streets) for a hardhat tour.

“The space is coincidentally perfect for runway shows,” says Alice Barlow in Spring Studios’ Event Programming. With two separate entrances (VIP/talent entering on St. John’s Lane and general public entering through 50 Varick St.), a labyrinth of hidden hallways, floor-to-ceiling windows and a super solid WiFi game (the building is shared with Verizon, which provides wireless service to most of NYC), she’s spot on.

“Right now, we’re focusing on quality over quantity,” Barlow says of capping their NYFW show count at six. It’s a smart move, considering the final Spring Studios won’t open until this summer. When it does, it will feature 7 studios, a cinema space for film screenings, full restaurant headed by Michelin Star Chef David Waltuck and the most colossal roof you’ve ever set foot on.

“This is the most colossal roof I’ve ever set foot on,” I muttered under my breath, to which Barlow replied, “Yes, it is. It’s the largest public roof in New York right now.” With a 650-person capacity, the roof will eventually be able to host runway shows, massive afterparties and full-blown events. New York Fashion Week may never be the same.
