Noticed a skirt silhouette that's seemingly everywhere lately? Us too. And we are majorly feeling it as a spring must-have. That's right, the wrap skirt (and its cousin, the wrap skort) is the perfect piece in which to welcome spring. Typically with pointy, downward-facing hems, the wrap skirt's been showing up in all sorts of great iterations — floral, textured, collaged, colorblocked — so the choice of look is completely yours. A sleek outfit component that's not overly sexy, consider the wrap skirt for your spring wardrobe arsenal, and one of our best-of picks below.

Your Go-To Transitional Jacket: The Anorak

When considering transitional outerwear, you're probably weighing your options between bomber jacket and trench—or shivering in a coatigan. We're here to remind you of another excellent option: the anorak. Typically designed to work well in the rain, the anorak is a sporty choice, great for making any look (from mini dresses to mom jeans) look just a little more rugged. Surprisingly, some of the best ones out there are clever riffs off the original (think eyelet fabrics, floral prints) and are from higher-end designers. That said, you can get in on the anorak look no matter your budget. See below for 15 of the season's best.

Disco Glam: Spring’s 70s Beauty Trend

Call it the American Hustle effect: the 1970s returned by way of bronzed beauties with blue lids, dewy skin, smoky black liner, tousled, voluminous locks, ultra-sleek, straight parts, full bushy brows and long perfectly separated lashes on the Spring 2014 runways. In all its retro glamour, the era brought Studio 54 back to life at Holly Fulton, Reem Acra and Jenny Packham for a definitive nod to disco influence.

Gucci Release New Timepieces and Jewelry Campaign (Forum Buzz)

Gucci's latest advertising campaign surfaced earlier today. The campaign was released at Baselworld 2014. The images were shot by Sølve Sundsbø and evoke the creative aesthetic of 1960s photographers Franco Rubartelli and Olivo Barbieri. Nadja Bender and Tommaso De Benedictis were selected to front the campaign which is slated for release in April.

Karl Lagerfeld Photographs Vanessa Paradis for Elle France (Forum Buzz)

Long-term Karl Lagerfeld muse and Chanel campaign girl, Vanessa Paradis fronts the latest issue of Elle France. The French actress is photographed by Karl Lagerfeld and is wearing a piece from Chanel's Spring 2014 collection.

This isn't the first time Paradis and Lagerfeld have worked together. The pair has collaborated for numerous magazine spreads and advertising campaigns. Paradise has also fronted various Chanel campaigns (my personal favorite being from 2005 for Chanel's latest handbag line).

"I normally don't like anything Jessica does in magazines, coz for me she's a great walker but not a mind-blowing editorial girl HOWEVER this is lovely, so good on her, THIS is a great shot," wrote Bertrando3.

Littlekiki was a little unsure about Chaix's styling: "Something about the styling makes her look older than usual, but gorgeous nonetheless."

"Stunning!!! IMO, I find that Vogue China's Collection Covers are far better than their main covers," enthused fashionlover2001.

Maxlinden also shared the same positive sentiments: "Gorgeous as usual. Beautiful cover."

The Fluorescent Face: Spring’s Most Understated Ways to Wear Neon Makeup

Bright, bold colors and spring are a natural pairing, and for this season, expect makeup to come in a full spectrum of rich and brilliant shades. The new neutrals are part of an eclectic rainbow of both brights and pastels. Punchy magenta, intense sky blue, hypercolored lilac, lime green and fluorescent tangerine orange are shades that are thrilling and shocking for spring, and they are becoming more familiar to the eye. Of all the beauty trends from the runway to incorporate into your spring makeup bag, neon hues may be the most intimidating, but they don’t have to be! When done right, they are not scary at all. To wit: models at Costello Tagliapietra wore painted lids in vibrant fresh green and Easter egg lilac, and still managed to look pared down. At Lela Rose and Marc by Marc Jacobs, the eyes were electrified with vivid highlighter hues in hyper pigmented blue shadow and green liner, while Jeremy Scott delivers full throttle intense opaque eyes with Big Bird yellow and sky blue crayons lining the upper and lower lids.

Miu Miu Fall 2014: A Delicious Treat (Runway Review)

miu miu fall 14 landscape

The Inspiration: Cotton candy, textural friction.

The Look: When's the last time Miuccia Prada didn't absolutely charm every fashion nerd everywhere with one of her collections? This show will do well to just add to her portfolio of perfection: winter pastels, brocade in the best way and downright sporty looks. The best is when all three concept were styled together into one outfit (an ice-blue brocade dress topped with a salmon-colored anorak topped with a blue/red colorblock cardigan). Also, the brocade dresses, blocked with coordinating colored vinyl, were a treat and will certainly be on any number of it-girls as soon as possible. Brocade jackets with blocked panels skewed both 70s and surprisingly early-80s, but the fancied-up twist will make them wearable today. Other highlights? Honestly, it's hard to choose when everything the designer touches is magically turned into an ingenious (and rightful) hit. Quilting and loose silhouettes have us (almost) wishing we could wear coats — this cool — for just a little while longer this season.

The Accessories: Bow-topped texture-blocked shoes that mimic rain boots (but certainly aren't, given the high heel), the pointiest pumps.

The Beauty: Flattened, center-parted hair (helmet head has never looked so good) and icy makeup — iced-plum lip gloss, light yellow eye shadow.

The Takeaway: Leave it to Miuccia Prada to prove that "ice dream" is NOT just a delicious frosty treat from a certain fast-food chain — it's also this collection.

Wild Beauty at Alexander McQueen Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

mcqueen-rf14-7774c

The Scene: Models walked on a mossy, wasteland-like runway.

The Inspiration: “It’s beauty and the beast, a wild beauty,” Sarah Burton told WWD.

The Look: Shown against a haunting backdrop, Burton certainly managed to convey her darkly romantic wild beauty inspiration. There's no denying that the museum-worthy craftsmanship of Burton's opulent work is awe-inspiring, but there was a dated and repetitive feel to many of this season's silhouettes — especially the empire and milkmaid dresses. The fur and lace-heavy collection stuck mostly to a black, white and brown palette with a few dark purple and green looks. While tiered lace sleeves along with elaborately feathered and fur-accented looks occasionally veered on the costume side, there were a number of stunning, red carpet-worthy dresses. Among the most beautiful looks were heavily textured mini dresses with A-line skirts and fitted bodices, two gowns with floral embroidery and feather-accented bottoms as well as the closing high-neck, sheer embroidered white gown.

The Accessories: Heavily embellished combat boots, corset-inspired knee-high boots, elaborate hand jewelry and small rounded handbags.

The Beauty: Hair was cornrowed with the exception of two strands pulled out straight to the front and an elaborate feathered brow look was created for some of the models.

The Takeaway: It may have been hit or miss when thinking about the collection in a "real world" context, but from start to finish the collection was immaculate in its painstaking details.

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac Dresses the Modern Woman to a T for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

jcdc fall 14 landscape

The Scene: The show's backdrop was not a plain white wall but a massive female face with flippy chin-length hair, made of lights.

The Look: A collection that brings together retro and modern, humor and clothes-wearing reality. These are beautiful garments and this is a luxury label, but this a collection that doesn't take itself too seriously. There are humorous parings like a 3/4-sleeved bodysuit (with 3D bird shoulder appliqués) styled with ribbed stockings and a bundled-up scarf or a moto jacket made to mimic a teddy bear (which, we must say, looks awfully, wonderfully warm). The lit-up face backdrop wasn't just random decor, but a hint of what was to come with the clothes. While the Prada flashbacks are kind of inevitable, these faces feel more like Impressionist renderings, and are used in a slightly more abstract way: zoomed-in on a dress, birdwatching or multiplied and pasted onto a scarf or exaggerated-lapel jacket; see also the face (much like the lit backdrop) on a fur top and fur coat.

The Accessories: Lots of good stuff here — vertical stripe fur scarves, a muff — but we're particularly interested in the platform mules with buckled leather straps going up the calves.

The Beauty: Licks of solid colors (medium-purple, bright blue) on the eyes, slicked-back ponytails.

The Takeaway: Beautiful, professional, a little smartly silly — JC/DC is describing (while dressing) the modern woman to a T.

So You Wanna Start Your Own Fashion Biz? StartUp FASHION Has You Covered

Nicole_Giordano_StartUpFASHIONStarting your own business can be insanely challenging. Starting your own fashion business? On another level. Between making connections, funding your vision and, oh yeah, actually designing, it may seem impossible that you could ever be the next Alexander Wang or Stella McCartney. And despite all the talented designers out there, there’s still a tragic number of struggling artists trying to make their mark on the industry.

That's where Nicole Giordano comes in. The founder of StartUp FASHION was inspired by her own journey as an emerging designer: "It was really difficult to get the help I needed," Giordano told me. "I was looking for a support system of people who understood what I was going through and couldn’t find it."

So she created it. StartUp FASHION is now a global community 30,000 strong comprised of emerging and independent designers in apparel, accessories and jewelry. Last week, they hosted a "How to Fund Your Fashion Business" event in NYC which outlined several truly viable, realistic funding model options for designers. For those of us that didn't attend, I caught up with Nicole to get the highlights, plus learn more about why in fashion, only the strong survive.

Julie Bensman: What are the three biggest take-aways from last week's event?

Nicole Giordano: It’s important to understand which stage of business you’re in before deciding which funding platforms are the best fit. For instance, the platform Pave.com is great for when your idea is just beginning to hatch, while Luevo.com is best once your collection is designed, and you've worked out your sampling and production plans upon successful funding.

Having a strong and supportive network in place before you start your funding quest is imperative for success. Are you building relationships with bloggers, editors and interested customers before you’re reaching out to them for support? You should be.

JB: Do you think it's important to be located in NYC for a fashion business to be successful?

NG: Sure, there are many benefits to being in a city so closely tied with the business of fashion: opportunities, networking, the energy…all these things are exciting and a real asset. But I don’t think being here is imperative for success. In fact, when it comes to marketing and public relations, it’s often more beneficial to be in a less-saturated place because your story might get noticed more easily.

JB: How important is social media with regards to marketing yourself/your business?

NG: Very. The benefit of social media is not only marketing your business but also discovering the lifestyle of your target market. Social media acts as an amazing vehicle for market research and, though it’s not actually free (as some may say), it's a more realistic expense for emerging fashion businesses than other marketing and research tools.

StartUp_FASHION_-_Fund_Fashion_Event

JB: Which new types of fashion businesses do you see becoming more and more successful?

NG: Those that stand for something (i.e. something more than "I love fashion!") and those designers who understand that success is relative. Why are you doing what you do? How are you helping to make the world a better place? This is your story and a great story is necessary for any business to succeed.

When it comes to success being relative, those designers who take time to stop and think about what they truly want are the successful ones. Being on the cover of Vogue and running a multi-million dollar business would be amazing. But so would running a business out of your home studio, spending every day doing exactly what you love, surrounded by the people who inspire you most, while making good money that pays the bills and allows you to do the things you enjoy. As a business owner, you get to decide what you want and create the path to get there.

JB: What's the best piece of business advice you've ever received?

NG: “If you’re not embarrassed by the first thing you put out there, you waited too long to start.” I can’t remember who said it but it was somebody smart.

Saint Laurent is Short and Shimmery for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

saint-laurent-rf14-2419a

The Scene: Alex Turner and Miles Kane who showed up with champagne and two full glasses.

The Inspiration: John Baldessari, a conceptual artist known for his work featuring found photography and appropriated images.

The Look: Short, shimmery and mismatched don't exactly make for collections that scream luxury and that was the root of the problem with this season's Saint Laurent lineup. With the exception of the direct references to Yves Saint Laurent's work — notably via reinterpretations of Le Smoking — there weren't many looks that appeared to be worth their sure-to-be-high price tags, something that was only aggravated by the poor styling. A shimmering mini dress paired with tights, high-shine shoes and a white dotted black fur coat, for example, left a model looking as though she was a pre-teen who got overly excited in her mother's closet. Are women really expected to shell out big bucks for little black dresses covered in a gold gun print and glittery, square-heeled shoes? The most success was found in the outerwear, which included long vests, A-line coats, capes and some beautiful furs. In a nod to his inspiration, the collection also included three sparkling "John Baldessari couture dresses," which are part of a limited and numbered edition.

The Accessories: Glittery, below-the-knee boots and low, square-heeled shoes along with structured rectangular-shaped bags covered in glitter.

The Beauty: Charcoal eyes and wind-swept hair worn down with bangs and parted in the middle.

The Takeaway: There's no question that Hedi Slimane is a talented designer, but his aesthetic seems better suited for a contemporary namesake label, not a luxury house like Saint Laurent.

Emanuel Ungaro’s Rather Rosy Outlook for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

ungaro fall 14 landscape

The Inspiration: A critter exploring a rose garden along with extreme sex appeal.

The Look: Roses, animals and sheer, oh my! Ungaro's latest collection consisted of ruminations on those three themes. Blush-colored cartoon roses appeared on bomber jackets and prim dresses, colored fur accented a modern coat and dotted sheer fabric forced a variety of garments into the ultra-sexy zone. While the latter concept mostly worked — straight-up sheer tops with censored breast panels — the first dress, where a criss-crossed black "X" was designed to meet the dress half-way, was a real recipe for complete nip-slip disaster. It really worked, though, on an oversized, collared midi dress where the solid form of a one shoulder dress met the sheer, polka dotted fabric to form the finished silhouette. It's an unusual look, but ultimately pretty cool. The rose pattern wasn't anything new, but it was pretty successful on a number of pieces, especially in variations on the theme.

The Accessories: Heeled booties made of lace were the real standouts.

The Beauty: The "no-makeup" makeup look and sleek hair that's also just a little messy.

The Takeaway: A rose is most definitely a rose this season at Ungaro.

Giambattista Valli Brings Couture to His Ready-to-Wear Runway (Runway Review)

valli-rf14-0910

The Inspiration: Cocktail wear.

The Look: Giambattista Valli knocked it out of the park with a print-heavy cocktail only lineup of dresses and outerwear. Upbeat, the collection featured a number of bright metallic shades, soft pinks and floral prints. The beauty of the collection lied in the designer’s sculpted shapes, particularly remarkable were his mini dresses with fitted tops and A-line bottoms. They came in graphic black and white patterns and later in oversized floral prints and high-shine oxblood. The designer also showed cocoon coats, skater skirts and a flower petal sweater.

The Accessories: Black ankle boots and a fluoro handbag with crossbody strap.

The Beauty: Hair was tightly pulled back, faces were bare and lips were pink so as to keep the focus on the collection.

The Takeaway: For high impact, sophisticated cocktail wear, look no further.

John Galliano Keeps It Natural and Luxe for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

galliano fall 14 landscape

The Inspiration: The natural world…gone luxe, kinda.

The Look: Nature-gone-luxe with rusty splatter prints and tidy patterns of gathered stones marking elegant silhouettes and fabrics. Think a pretty gray velvet dress sprayed with rust tones and muted turquoise as well as a print featuring stones arranged according to color decorating a deep-V dress and cardigan. Since you expect nonstop luxury from the Galliano label, this almost felt subdued — until you got to the fur collars, the alligator-effect jumpsuit and the bodysuit-cum-gown made of royal purple. That said, most embellishment was pretty pared back, including seams dotted with plain silver pieces or a fur section on a big-shouldered sweater.

The Accessories: Stone belts, extra large sequined beanies and complicated zip-up snakeskin platform booties. And one fur/snakeskin clutch for glam factor.

The Beauty: Filled-in brows, but otherwise nothing too crazy.

The Takeaway: Even considering the floor-length pale velvet, this outing felt weirdly tame.

Andrew Gn Showcases Cool Cartoons and Cut-Outs for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

andrew gn fall 14 landscape

The Look: Bright colors, cool cut-outs and cartoon robot embroidery ruled Andrew Gn's latest collection — the designer certainly hit all sorts of different points up on the runway. There were work-ready separates, sexy garments that make full use of sheer paneling and cutesy robot renderings. In fact, while a lot of pieces wouldn't be work-approriate thanks to plunging necklines and sheer bottoms, several of the cut-out pieces felt office supply-inspired with paper clip-like accents marking the elbows and collars of jackets as well as adorning the bottom hem of a knee-length skirt. The robots were a quirky but fun take on the statement sweatshirt that's still going around.

The Accessories: Satchels and totes in crisp colors.

The Beauty: Sleek, straight hair parted in the center along with smoky, purple eyes.

The Takeaway: Andrew Gn's catering to the woman both interested in cartoons as well as looking elegant for a black tie event and we're pretty sure she's out there, somewhere.

Chloe Dazzles with Outerwear (Runway Review)

chloe-rf14-1491

The Scene: Dree Hemingway and model Bonnie Chen were seated front row.

The Inspiration: "Amore mysterious and wilder side of the Chloé girl," according to WWD.

The Look: This season, silhouettes were loose and elongated making for gorgeous pastel blanket coats with sumptuously large collars, jackets with large fold-over collars, collarless belted coats, a white shaggy coat and a fantastic leopard fur coat with dotted color accents. Most of the skirts and dresses hit at or below knees this season and came in a variety of prints including animal, while the most notable trousers were wide-leg cuffed Bermuda shorts. Sporty knits were also in the mix along with a series of pieces embellished with gold geometric hardware.

The Accessories: Shoes included furry pumps with ankle straps, monochrome booties made out of a thick sporty fabric that almost mimicked sneakers and fold-over knee-high boots. Handbags were slouchy with prominent zippers.

The Beauty: Deep side parted hair with the shorter side of the part tucked behind the models’ ears and the other half flowing free in the front. Makeup was kept understated with a lilac smoky eye, matte skin, flushed cheeks and nude lips.

The Takeaway: No gimmicks, no themes, just a lot of beautiful clothes to appeal to fashion-forward women as well as those with more understated taste.

Beauty Report: ‘Effortless’ Wavy Hair at Isabel Marant

Marant pfw

imaxtree

Now that we're well into Paris Fashion Week, it's time to get down to the basics of French girl style. There's no one that typifies effortless French style like Isbael Marant and the brand's beauty look is always similarly styled. Marant has famously said that she is her own muse, which explains why she so passionately caters to her 'girl' and why her beauty looks are all about undone glamour. Hairstylist Sam McKnight admitted that the natural look is actually quite a bit of work, but that doesn't mean you can't do it at home. McKnight prepped the models' hair with mousse before curling random sections to create a wave. He finished off the look with Bumble and bumble's Thickening Dryspun Finish ($29), a hairspray that not only adds fullness but also texture, which works to enhance natural volume. This is perfect for a date look when you want to appear like you're not really trying.

Comme des Garçons Crafts a Nightmarish Fall 2014 Collection (Runway Review)

comme-des-garc-rf14-1955c

The Inspiration: “Monster.”

The Look: This season's Comme des Garçons collection could fittingly, given the designer's inspiration, cause a few nightmares. Green-lipped, wig-clad models walked the runway in supersized, layered and often knotted garments made of padded fabrics with their hands tied or bound, while the most eerie looks engulfed the models’ faces. Rei Kawakubo noted in her show notes that her monster was a reflection of “the craziness of humanity, the fear we all have, the feeling of going beyond common sense, the absence of ordinariness, expressed by something extremely big, by something that could be ugly or beautiful.” It was perfectly reflected in the lineup. It's undeniably impressive that Kawakubo is able to consistently come up with original ideas, but given that the collection’s most wearable piece was a wildly-oversized blazer, the most interesting part might be seeing how these clothes actually translate on retail racks.

The Accessories: Pointed menswear-inspired flats and boots with eyelets.

The Beauty: Green lips and supersized, barrel-curled wigs.

The Takeaway: There's no denying the originality and craftsmanship, but this collection had a questionable place on a commercial runway.

Acne Piles on the Psychedelic for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

acne-rf14-1477

The Inspiration: The 60s and 70s.

The Look: This season's Jonny Johansson-designed Acne collection was rife with fantastic prints and colors, though they didn't always make for the most wearable looks. Most of the missteps can be attributed to styling, however, including mismatched print-on-print looks along with oddball hats and disk-shaped necklaces that came widely oversized. Among the season’s high notes were wraps that appeared to be pinned onto the models, chunky knit sweaters with extra long sleeves, utilitarian-style monochrome dresses and tops as well as psychedelic prints on everything from drawstring anoraks (even one done in zebra ponyskin) to below-the-knee skirts.

The Accessories: Square-toe oxfords, below-the-knee boots, oversized hats and oversized metal disc "necklaces."

The Beauty: Muted faces, while hair was side-parted, tightly smoothed to the models' head and pulled back.

The Takeaway: Acne always has a bit of quirk and while most women will probably not want to wear an oversized knit with psychedelic print trousers, when taken apart there was much to love.

Vivienne Westwood Goes Tribal and Couture for Fall 2014 (Runway Review)

westwood-rf14-2094

The Inspiration: Charles Frederick Worth, the father of Haute Couture, and Peruvian tribes.

The Look: There was a tribal feel to this season’s Vivienne Westwood collection, a point driven home by the feather-accented accessories and face paint the models walked out with. Wraps, blanket skirts, tunics and tropical prints were complemented by 19th Century-style puffed shoulder coats and off-the-shoulder dresses to tie into the Worth inspiration. The best looks were layered, wrapped and done in a metallic stripe or colorblocked print. As is usually the case with Westwood’s collections, many of the looks were a bit jumbled with too many pieces stacked onto the models' bodies, but taken apart, there were plenty of individual pieces that would add wonderfully unique wardrobe staples to many closets. As for the bridal look this season? It was a white tulle, long-sleeve, high-neck gown — demure were it not completely sheer on top.

The Accessories: 19th Century-style chunky-heeled shoes, many of which were patterned, lace-up boots with chunky heels, head coverings with feather tips and patterned rectangular handbags.

The Beauty: Models had tribal-inspired paint marks on their faces and some also had feathers in their hair.

The Takeaway: Leave it to Westwood to get inspired by Peruvian tribes along with a 19th Century couturier and somehow make it work.
